DANVILLE It wasn't an open-field tackle that foiled a suspected armed robber Friday from achieving her goal, but it was the fast thinking of former San Francisco 49er Brent Jones.
The tight end happened to be nearby and nabbed Kimberly Pavlakis, 48, of San Leandro as she reportedly ran from the scene of an attempted robbery Friday morning, police said.
At 11:21 a.m., police were alerted to an armed robbery at Escapades Clothing at 406 Sycamore Valley Road, said Danville police Sgt. Tom Padilla. The suspect was thought to be armed with a handgun but fled the store without taking any money.
A store employee ran out after her and began yelling for help, police said. The cries were heeded by Jones and another alert passer-by, who converged on Pavlakis like two tacklers on a ball carrier as she was running to her vehicle, police said.
Danville police Chief Chris Wenzel said Jones came up behind Pavlakis and, due to his size, was easily able to overpower her. Authorities were summoned, and Pavlakis was taken into custody.
Police said toy a gun was found in a tote bag she was carrying. While lauding Jones' actions, Wenzel said citizens should exercise caution.
"The bottom line is that it's great for any person in the community to help law enforcement," he said. "At the same time, you have to be very careful when you get involved."
Pavlakis was arrested and taken to the Contra Costa county jail.
I can almost hear it from Elmer Fudd, "you have to be veeeeeryyy careful......"
I'm glad "another thief bytes the dust" :)
She'll probably claim she's permanently disabled from being tackled, and sue him for millions. Isn't that how most of the stories end up these days? The criminals win as often as they lose.
There. That makes the sentence more consistent. Note to mention easier for their dyslexic readers.
Hey!!! Let's hear it for a pro athlete who is actually stopping crime.
Hurray for Brent Jones! Keeping things safe just down the road from here.
Danville's a pretty nice place ... I wonder what Ms. Pavlakis had in mind, that maybe the Danville-ites wouldn't defend themselves?
Yep. We can say goodbye to those good samaritan days. It's no wonder many people don't want to get involved. You stick your hand out to help and it is filled with a lawsuit.
He happen to be there....
Well just so happens alot of Guys live in Blackhawk. Closed community that attracts big earners. So Danville is their shopping village.
Way to go, Brent Jones! He was always one of my favorite Niners.
I keep hoping the rumors about him possibly running for Congress someday will turn out to be true.
good thing he tackled the right person.
my mom had a friend who knew someone who was beating to a pulp. He was at a laundromat and someone had been raped...he matched the description so two good samritans went in and beat the hell out of him.
on top of that, he had tried to defend himself and cut his hand on one of the good samritans teeth. this caused an infection that made his hand swell up about four times its normal size.
don't know if they ever caught the real perp.
