Bloomberg Spends $9.9M on NYC Mayor's Race

NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Michael Bloomberg has spent $9.9 million of his own money on his re-election campaign so far, a signal that the billionaire will spare no expense in November's mayoral race and may even exceed the $74 million he spent in his successful 2001 bid for office.

In the past two months, Bloomberg has spent $5.6 million - just shy of the $5.7 million that his Democratic rivals are each allowed to spend before the Sept. 13 primary. The four Democrats are subject to spending caps because they accept public money.

More than half the money Bloomberg has spent has gone to a roster of well-paid political consultants, according to a Campaign Finance Board disclosure report due Monday but released to reporters Friday.

Some of the most expensive work - and potentially the most valuable - has been creating "voter development lists," a database for field activity and mailings that would allow the campaign to hone in on potential voters.

Democrats used Bloomberg's disclosure report as an opportunity to paint him as an out-of-touch billionaire.

"It would take the average New York family 130 years to make the sum of money Mike Bloomberg has spent in two months trying to buy their vote," said Jen Bluestein, communications director for Fernando Ferrer, the former Bronx borough president who polls show to be the leading Democratic contender.

Bloomberg, who built the financial news service Bloomberg LP, also made available broad outlines of his personal financial information, including $139.6 million in donations he made to 842 different charities.

He accepts $1 a year from the city as a token salary, but also made between $1,000 and $5,000 this year for his work playing himself in the television drama "Law & Order."

His first candidacy was probably initially dreamt up by the producers of the movie Waterworld.

Why would any Republican want to reelect him?

The days of the common man being elected are long over. The founders would be horrified at the way offices are bought.

The guy was a 'Rat, but they wouldn't nominate him to run for mayor, so he donated a ton of money to the GOP and they were dumb enough to take it. I wish the Republicans up there would tell him they've decided to go with somebody different.

I was just going to post that my thoughts are the same---I guess political positions really are only for the wealthy--

Maybe I am just becoming jaded to the whole politics thing since 2000, but what Bloomberg is spending is obscene!

NYC is the prototypical blue city; it went 77% for Algore and 74% for Kerry.

To expect politics or successful politicians in a place like that to be anything short of loathsome is not realistic.

No, Bloomberg is way worse. He's worse the both the Clintons. He's left of Stalin and he's more arrogant than John Kerry.

Bloomberg actions since becoming mayor of New York City have made him look like he came from the French Royal school of ruling, right before the French Revolution...

What a piker, the guy in two posts above spent almost as much on his kid's bar mitzvah.

"Now if he could just start acting like a Republican."

He is acting like a Republican. What he isn't acting like is a Conservative.

You're not becoming jaded, just realistic. Bloomberg's spending IS obscene, and the average American can't possibly run for national office anymore. It's financially out of his reach.
