OBEIDI, Iraq -- The U.S. military wrapped up a major offensive in a remote desert region near the Syrian border Saturday, saying it had cleaned out the insurgent haven and killed more than 125 militants during the weeklong campaign against followers of Iraq's most wanted terrorist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.

Nine U.S. Marines were killed and 40 injured during Operation Matador _ one of the largest American campaigns since militants were driven from Fallujah six months ago. The number of civilian casualties was not immediately known.

This operation is over. But Musab Al Zarqawi and Al Qaeda should not count on getting too comfortable. We'll be back when they can least expect it.

Heard about this today on the local CBS radio affiliate. Not surprisingly, they mentioned ONLY the number of US military killed, and not ONE WORD about how many terrorist were snuffed out. Glad I can get the actual details from FreeRepublic...

Excellent point. The area where much of the fighting is going on is near the syrian border. This is a hot bed of smuggling and terrorist activity. It needs troops in the area at all times. Some of the reports said this was one of the first times that people in the area had any security at all in a long time. Even saddam stayed away.
