Alternatively, the Holocaust Memorial in DC should be expanded, to include victims of communism. Currently, the exclusion of victims of Stalinism and Maoism from the DC Museum, reduces the Museum to a monument to political correctness.

They should build it in front of the State Department, to remind the appeasers every day.

It should include live webcams of such totalitarian repression as going on in Sudan, Zimbabwe, etc.

It's merely "political correctness" to memorialize the deaths of 6 million innocent people, an enitre people/religion which was marked for extinction by the Nazis?

If you'd like to be on this middle east/political ping list, please FR mail me.

Don't see why not, we could build it next door.

Well, we do have a memorial to the many victims of the famine forced upon the people of Ireland by the people of Britain.

Boston Famine Memorial

I find it odd that the memorial web site states that the memorial, "feature(s) two life-size sculptures, one depicting a family leaving Ireland's shores, impoverished and desperate, and another depicting a family arriving in Boston, filled with hope and determination."

I've viewed this memorial. To me, it obviously portrays one family impoverished, desperate starving and without food. The other family is healthy, carrying a basket filled with food, and shown walking past the destitute family as the mother glances back with a stern disapproving look on her face.

To me, the sculpture represented plentiful England ignoring the starving Irish.

Am I remembering this wrong? Or is the web site being PC?

Yes, and the monument should mention American bankers who bankrolled Soviet revolution.

Without their help, Soviet revolution would not succeed.

I don't think it's political correctness at all, rather the fact that while American's recognize the evil of Hitler and take pride in his defeat, the view of many toward communism, here and even in Eastern Europe, is mixed. Communism certainly isn't universally reviled as an evil. IMO that would make construction of a museum both more difficult, and potentially more productive.

Russia should build it, on the site of the Lubyanka.

Sure! we should also build a memorial to all of the dumb illegal alians who die while crossing the border into the United States. Afterall we feel so terrible about it and they are only trying to do a job that Americans won't do.

I'm kind of torn on this. As a Lithuanian whose grandparents came to the US legally to escape one of the purges, I would hate to infringe upon the Holocaust. I realize that many Lithuanians, Poles, Gypsies, Russians/communists (anyone with the sickle and hammer symbol, 'commisar order') and others died during the Holocaust and other purges and pogroms, but the Holocaust nearly wiped out the Jewish population. 6 Million of the 12 million were Jewish.

It is estimated that about half of the european gypsies were killed. The gypsies and the Jews were the two groups killed for the crime of existing while the others were killed because there were too many of them, or because they disagreed with him/Hitler.

The Jehovah's Witnesses in Germany and Freemasons in Europe were killed, too. The Jehovah's Witnesses were given a choice to leave the camps if they renounced their beliefs, and few did. The Jehovah's Witnesses had to wear purple stars.

Oddly enough, homosexuals went from wearing a yellow armband with an A on it, to wearing pink triangles. Some things never change!

Here's an idea for the centerpiece:

A bronze ring with many different faces from the many nationalities that have been killed, all turned inward to a central disc. Over this outer ring, a constant flow of water, like tears. On the inner disc, made of steel, we see the faces of Lenin, Stalin, and Mao. Their visages are those of agony. The ring is surrounded by fire, sybolizing Hell.

Apropos.
