Sa far Ft Monmouth, NJ; Grotton, CT, Portsmouth Navy, Brunswick Navy and Ellsworth, SD.
The last one, just christened, was cursed with the name Jimmy Carter.
It's a hunter killer sub of all things. God save its crew with that name on it.
We'd be happy to just keep our taxes here in the state instead of sending them to Red States who apparently need our money. Red States would be living in holes in the ground if not for us Blue Staters. We get punished enough for having an idiot Governor, but every person we've sent to DC votes for the GOP in leadership elections. Everything else is gravy.

Would it kill people to have the Y-Axis of a graph end at zero? I hate stupid manipulative graphs like this.
Military spending as a percentage of total outlays is meaningless over time when the total outlays have increased by a factor of 10 (at least).
i spent five years at eb. newport news can also build subs and they also build surface ships. all it would take would be another naval decision to go single-source like they did with reactor cores. if given the choice between eb and nn, they'll pick nn because nn has better representation on the seapower subcommittee.
we got hit back then, too. United Nuclear. now the Mohegan Sun casino - i kidd you not.
Aren't most reserve units on active duty bases? Maybe just trimming the fat there...
http://www.manews.org/
Of the 192 countries in the world, the United States currently has military units stationed in 135 of them. The following list is taken from the U. S. Department of Defense, "Active Duty Military Personnel Strengths by Regional Area and by Country":
I hate to tell you this but the same thing happened to Long Beach before it got the axe. I am not saying that this base you are talking about will for sure get it, but don't be too surprised that "recent expansions and improvements" doesn't mean diddly when put on these closure lists.
Ellsworth is the second largest employeer in South Dakota. This will hurt big time.
I guess we won't be getting that new Wal Mart now. (sarc)
Thanks.
Niagara Falls Air Force base is on the list to close. The local economy is very bad as it is. What's shocking is that N.F. is across the river from the Canadian border. One local resident suggested that it should be used as a command center to fight terroism. It will be interesting to see what our state senator, Hitlery, does about this. If she does, it will be the first help she's ever given this area.
If liberalism is a mental disorder, and NYC is a hotbed of liberalism, why does anyone care about 9/11? They deserved it. We should have handed Osama a medal...or only be mad at him because we didn't get a chance to do it first, right? </sarcasm>
It's odd to me, as an outsider, that you would endanger the lives of liberals and conservatives alike in the NE because of the way the averages worked out. Look at the numbers: some states were split nearly 50/50 on the votes. The communities who will be punished will not be those near the bases. The closest base to Boston is Hanscom, I believe, and that's staying open in very liberal Concord/Lexington. The bases that are closing are in the more rural, more conservative areas. You mean to tell me that a bunch of liberals are going to change the way they vote because a bunch of people they don't care about are suddenly negatively impacted? The punishment is being meted out to the wrong groups.
And remember, the next time a terrorist hits the northeast and kills a lot of people...you're going to have to clean it up if they don't have the resources...unless the good thing to do is let people suffer. I'm not sure what to expect from you all. It ranges from Christian to vitriolic hate in a few posts.
Exactly. Try and buy a house in NE vs Alabama. Makes sense to get out of cramped, expensive areas.
i would have thought that you would want coverage across the entire country and not centralize in the event someone took a nuke. eggs all in one basket kinda thing.
but hey! i've been wrong before.. maybe... i think...
Dang. Friend from ERAU just got a job as a Navy contractor up there. I wonder if she'll get laid off.
Lieberman just came out and called the Pentagon's decision "irrational and irresponsible." Well, this will certainly make the Senate even more fractious!
Sorry, but that is something to ask DOD, not me.
Base closing list.
