"I think [a debate] would be great because then we'd prove him wrong and open up his opinion a little bit," Sarah Loeb, an ETHS sophomore, said Thursday."
Skulls full of mush.
This would be a laugh.
Then the speeches begin. Iraqi National Congress representatives plead for a democratic Iraq, a speech by el-Dawa is peppered with Islamic references, and the Iraqi Democratic Party explains why delaying the election six months would allow all Iraqi citizens to participate.
Here at Evanston Township High School, it's a surprisingly typical scene.
Ever since the school instituted a global studies requirement in 1988, international history, culture, and foreign policy have infused the curriculum to an unusual degree. Even the after-school program - with Model United Nations, Islamic Awareness, and Japanese Tea Ceremony - has a global flair.
But that global flair makes the Evanston school somewhat of an anomaly in the United States. The scope of most of the nation's schools remains largely limited to the US - or at least Western civilization...........................***
"In 2003, ETHS won an excellence in international education award from the Asia Society and the Goldman Sachs Foundation. ETHS offers seven languages, including Japanese and Hebrew, and has several clubs with an international flavor, including Model United Nations and Amnesty International. Students and staff also point out that the school requires yearlong courses in U.S. history and Western civilization.
Remember, while the vast majority of teens spend their time watching TV and flirting, there is a small minority that does nothing but study hard all the time. They may be liberals due to lack of life experience, but they're by no means dummies.
A preferred debate would be between their so-called "teachers" at that or any American Public School!
When my wife went to North Shore Country Day, she had to tutor the "less fortunate", so they sent her to ETHS. She was not very impressed. It might have been the magnetometers at the doors turned her off first turned her off, but then again the students that she dealt with were not incredibly bright.
Indeed, if they think that they're going to open Rush's mind on this.
You guys are getting caught up in the media aspect of this. You must realize that the majority of students at ETHS, while angered by Rush's comments, did not even approach the stupidity of our classmates. We read this article in our Logic class last week and everyone was enraged -- as stupid as Rush tried to make us look to the public, these idiotic students only made it worse. Of course the media isn't going to cover the majority opinion, which is: "What a dick. But then again, he has no idea what he's talking about, so why do we care what he thinks?"
Here's the reality of the situation, people. Rush bashed on Aaron Becker, a teacher at our school, because he teaches Middle-Eastern Studies. What Rush doesn't comment on is that Mr. Becker is a white middle-class male. What's even sillier is that the very teacher Rush has picked on is certified to teach United States AP history, a year-long, intense, difficult study on the history of our country. Believe me, I took it last year. I also took Russian Studies and Asian Studies as my "evil" Global Studies classes, and was taught both by white, middle-class educators. I don't know how Rush gets away with making comments like this up.
To sum up, there are two things you need to realize about this: a) Rush's accusations were unfair, as he has no real understanding of what occurs at our school. We have an exemplary history program, and US AP History is the single most popular AP class at our school. b) The majority of students are not idiots like these kids. The press covered their "demands" for a debate because it's outrageous. They don't cover 99% of us, who are angry but dismissive of Rush's short-sighted, naive comments about our school. What kind of news would that be?
