The Air Force will lose 2,260 military and 2,839 civilian manpower positions, and 1,055 reserve drill authorizations next year, according to the 2004 force-structure announcement released July 23. Many bases, both active duty and reserve component, are affected by the realignment. In many cases, units will gain aircraft and missions, while others will pare down.
Besides manpower reductions, the realignment formally announces the >retirement of the C-9A Nightingale and KC-135E Stratotanker aircraft.
According to Air Force officials, the 20 C-9s are being retired because of reduced-patient movement, range limitations and increasing maintenance and upgrade costs. The aeromedical-evacuation mission will become a requirements-based system using all passenger-capable aircraft.
The service will retire 44 of the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve Command's 43-year-old KC-135Es next year, replacing them with 24 KC-135Rs from the active-duty fleet. By the end of fiscal 2006, the Air Force will have retired 68 of the KC-135Es.

Miramar's on the list? How incredibly stupid.
Dang---I count 4 closures for Texas and ONLY l for NEW YORK-what is up with that!
California got hit hard also--
jeez, what does Clinton and Schumer have on this Administration? or does New York not have many military bases?
Beale and Kirtland AFBs? Those are very important are they not? Wow.
And Closing down San Diego? Um, Isnt that were the bulk of our Marines graduate from? My understanding is that you only go to Paris Island if you signed up from the original 13 states.
Wow, oh wow, this does not look good.
THANKS...people in/@ Fort Knox, Ky., will be relieved.
Only 1 in Pennsylvania, also..
Forgot to add the Redstone Arsenal. That is part of the Marshal flight center/ where NASA is located.
For what ever reason, these rounds of base closings look to hurt us.
Why are we closing these bases down again?
Closure Redstone Arsenal, Alabama ?
Oh my god
Ellsworth. I guess we'll get more Bombers here, unless they meant to realign at Ellsworth. Of course this list could be completely B.S.
For later discussion
I really hate to say this, but I hope we find a way to fight a few of these base closings. I am sure that some are needed - but some of the bases scheduled to close - i am just dumb founded.
Then again, I am dumb founded to hear that some people want to replace the M-1A1/2 with nothing more than a Striker with a big gun on top.
Maybe San Diego will finally find a place for that new airport it's been "studying" for the past 30 years.
..but, I must admit, the ChiCOMS, can/will change everything REAL QUICK...and these base closing take time.
thank God Wright Patterson is not on that list....
I just bought a house....
was there anything about DOD bases, like DLA or Columbus or anything like that?
What the heck will substitute for the Naval Postgrad School in Monterey?
Miramar and MCRD that is really dumb
Frankly, there are no surprise here. Every one of these bases has been in the cross hairs for some time and, in spite of protestations, good arguments have long been made for this action in each and every case.
I hope they're keeping Area 51 open. I mean, geeze, what would they do with the aliens if they closed it?
Then Army how can take more MIA2s and M2s ?
