I think there are different practices based upon why a person chooses to eat vegan. The friends that I mentioned are not PETA types. They eat this way because they see it as healthy. One of the parents is a recovering alcoholic and feels that she needs to "control" everything that enters her body. I have never heard her mention killing or enslaving of animals as a reason for her diet.That's interesting. I haven't known too many vegans. I've just read literature that empasizes the moral/idealogical angle.
I thinks vegans can be healthy, but have to be very careful about B12. Apparently many people don't absorb it well from a multivitamin pill.

My sibs are vegan for multiple reasons.
As for B12, there are numerous fortified foods now on the market for vegetarians/vegans (soy milk, meat analogs, cereals, etc) so B12 shouldn't be an issue IF the person is aware of getting the fortified foods in their diet.
Vegetarians do better than vegans because they get their B12 via diary and eggs.
