Thank you for posting this! WOW More great information I'm learning about the South (which I never learned while in the West). Saw a PBS-type show the other night on the Appalachians. Some of the data blew my (west-coast mind). Stuff that is never included in the usual tirades against the south by liberals. For example, Cherokees emulating the Europeans, ALSO bought and owned slaves to work their plantations. And... Appalachian boys who went but refused to fight for the Union, were hunted down and murdered in front of their families, which is why many to this day refuse to vote "democrat". And that such "northern aggressive action" more than likely lay the groundwork for the Hatfield-McCoy events.
The freespeech, the richness and fullness of history in the South continues to set me free.

The freespeech, the richness and fullness of history in the South continues to set me free. I work with and have several clients that are old Southern Jews. Talk about draaawwwlls. They are excellent deer and bird hunters, poker players and love to get out and crawl around the bars at night. Come to think of it, they're...good 'ol boys.

This doesn't quite compute to me... the Appalachians were known for their sympathy for the Union, and many did fight for the Union. That's why they've voted consistently Republican since the Civil War while the rest of the South has only recently come around. If the northern soldiers had committed atrocities against Appalachians, the only rational response would have been for them to not vote Republican.
