Iris Scanning To Begin At Orlando International Airport

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Florida's busiest airport will begin using high-tech iris-scanning technology to filter out possible terrorists and add an additional layer of security, according to Local 6 News.

People at Orlando International Airport will have both irises scanned at special computers to determine their identity.

"This will be an additional layer of information that is enrolled, which will be biometric information," OIA director of security Brigitte Rivera Goersch said. "Employees irises will be enrolled for the additional layer of security."

The Airport Access Control Pilot Program or AACPP is a first of its kind, according to the report.

A person would be required to stand in front of a special mirror and have both eyes scanned.

"It has to verify both irises, not just one iris," Goersch. "Statistically it is very reliable. Iris scanners -- the technology of iris scanning -- is considered one of the most reliable biometric technologies."

"You know just like we did with the airplanes with the cockpit doors and air marshals and all of that kind of stuff," federal security director Art Meinke said. It is just another step to try to figure out what can we do better."

Local 6 News reported that the 90-day test could be expanded and eventually moved to airports throughout the nation.

reading the article this is a measure for the employees at the airports. They will probably enter the data on all employees and new hires into the data base.

Orlando's the airport where a brother-in-law wasn't allowed to travel with his family until the next day....he objected to his six year old daughter being taken aside for a full search, so was told he needed a 24 hour cooling off period before he could rejoin his family in Minneapolis.

We as a people have been giving up liberty and freedom for more security. For instance I think soccer moms are more concerned about security and are willing to give up some freedoms.

I think all this stuff with Iris scanning will filter down into other transactions like first searching for criminals or scaning newborns to protect them from kidnapping etc. Next thing you know a bank will say hey we are going to require a quick iris scan to makre sure you are not a terrorist funding money then it will progress to a iris scan if you take out money to makre sure you are the owner etc etc.

An example of this progression is the seatbelt law in ohio

At first it came out as voluntary, then it progressed to a patrolman could give you a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt ONLY if he pulled you over for speeding and noticed you was not wearing a setabelt. Under the current law a patrolman can pull you over for just not wearing a seatbelt and ticketing you just for that.

When will the iris scan be used for sporting events or getting on a toll type highway.
