Pizza man sorry for bringing down Canada minister
Wed May 11, 2005 04:55 PM ET
OTTAWA (Reuters) - A pizza shop owner who forced former Canadian immigration minister Judy Sgro to resign by claiming she had offered to help him avoid deportation has admitted he lied and has apologised, Sgro said on Tuesday.
Sgro quit her job in January after Harjit Singh filed an affidavit accusing her of offering to help him stay in Canada in return for pizza deliveries and assistance with her election campaign. Singh was deported to India in February.
"I now admit I did not have a meeting with Judy Sgro and at no time did she request any campaign assistance from me. Nor did she help me with my immigration problems," Singh wrote in a letter to Sgro which she read out in Parliament.
At the time of her resignation, Sgro was also under investigation by Parliament's ethics commissioner for giving a temporary residency permit to a Romanian stripper who had worked on her election campaign. She also extended the woman's expired work permit.
The commissioner told Sgro this week that she had done nothing wrong but had been put in a conflict of interest by staff who did not give her all the details about the stripper.

The Liberals are going to make Sgro a martyr.

Harjit Singh Not your typical pizza-guy name.

Did he apologize before or after he was deported? And was the deportation political retaliation on the part of the Liberal Government for his allegations against Sgro? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Were the pizzas free, or just the deliveries?

Was the pizza organically grown?

He admitted he lied. What does your inquiring mind need to know?

Whether there's a connection between Singh's reversal and his deportation from Canada. Neverthless Ms. Sgro was hardly an Immigration Minister who stayed out of trouble. Singh was one thing, the way she handled the stripper matter was another issue.

A seal walks into a bar in Nova Scocia, and the bartender says; "What would you like?"
The seal replies: "ANYTHING but Canadian Club....."

"Nor did she help me with my immigration problems," Singh wrote in a letter to Sgro which she read out in Parliament. How do we know the letter is real? The pizza guy got deported back in February, so he not available to verify.

It took her two months to get a confession he lied? I might feel bad for her but this was not the only reason Sgro was forced out of her job.

Point taken. But confessions of a Sikh pizza maker who is subject to a deportation order should be taken by a block of salt.
Plus the ministry was under a cloud with the "visa for sale" scandal in Shanghai at the time.
Sgro may have been naive, inexperienced or incompetent, it matters little. Immigration was the last place to be for an inexperienced cabinet minister.
In this day and age for Immigration to be considered a training portfolio is a serious mistake.
As far as strippers go, the Hells Angels control the stripper trade from San Diego to Alaska. If she didn't know that she is truly stupid.
