I like Mike Pence, but I am wondering if he needs to become a U.S. senator first. Has any congressman ever won the presidency?

No.The only potential candidate that has served that I am aware of is Hagel and McCain.

Right answer. Good for Pence. I will pay attention to what he does from now on.

Two congressman have gone straight to the White House;Garfield and Lincoln.Only three Senators have ever gone straight to the White House.I like to point out that there have been two conservatives elected President(Reagan,Coolidge)So it is only as rare as having a conservative President.Being a Senator would be a demotion. The House is with the people.

Mike Pence is my congressman.

I use to listen to his radio program on 1070am WIBC from Indianapolis!

He also does regular call in with Greg Garrison on his morning radio program on WIBC.

They web cast, you should put a link up to listen so Freepers can get a taste of one of the "good guys"!

Chip Reid
Correspondent
NBC News
Updated: 7:24 p.m. ET Jan. 21, 2005To call President Bush’s second-term agenda ambitious would be an understatement.

The congressional leadership, dominated by loyal Republicans, has every intention of giving him what he wants.

“I see this as the best opportunity in the eight years of the Bush presidency to really do domestic policy changes,” says Rep. Roy Blunt, R-Mo.

But barely out of the starting blocks, Bush already faces significant resistance from both parties.

The president wants to allow workers to invest some of their Social Security taxes in the stock market, but one key Republican recently described that plan as “a dead horse.” And Democratic leaders are already digging in their heels.

“It's not a crisis now, so why spend $2 trillion, cut benefits?” asks Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. “We're throwing grandma out with the bath water with this.”

Immigration reform threatens to split the Republican Party. The president wants a guest worker program, issuing temporary visas for millions of illegal immigrants. That’s adamantly opposed by many conservative Republicans who say it would reward illegal behavior.

“I think it's imperative that we put our heads together and come up with a system that reinforces the importance of respect for the law,” says Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind.

But the most explosive issue could be federal judges. Democrats have used Senate rules to tie up debate, blocking some Bush nominees they deem too conservative. Now Republicans are threatening to change the rules — a step the Democrats call the “nuclear option.” Why?

“They know if this happens it will blow up the Senate,” says Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. “It will stop the Senate from being able to get [the] things done the president says he wants done.”

Hanging over all of the president's plans is the war in Iraq. Members of both parties say if the elections later this month do not lead to greater stability there, Iraq could become a significant distraction from the president's domestic agenda.

He wouldn't have to relenquish until deep in 2007.Then he would know if he was viable or not.It is worth the risk, what other choice do we have?

I guess he would have the best chance if he were governor.

He seems like the perfect candidate, and has the sense to agree with ME on every issue. :)

I like Pences attitude but I wouldn't give you a farthling for his chances.. Its pretty much Hillarys turn at bat, and the RINOs are quite fair to democrats being mostly democrats in essence themselves.. The fix is in, the republicans will take a dive.. My rhetorical moneys on Hillary but my heart is with Pence..

Take a dive by allowing the Mexican border to rot and fester.. it seems to be working too.. Economic insurgents are insurgents as surely as drug carrying moles which some them are that too.. Look what Bushs daddy did.. got Clinton elected with the ol' "read my lips gambit".. that sunk him.. Junior may outdo him by destroying or splintering the WHOLE republican party.. Which may not be a bad idea except that by the real republicans get any ground with a NEW party.. The socialists will have already taken over completely IF they havn't already..

"Christian, Conservative and Republican".

Yeah, well that's all well and good, but I want to hear his plan on shipping the illegals back to whence they came and how he's going to shut the border.

All else is secondary.

'Critical care' my ass. That's as weaselly a phrase as the 'health of the mother' exception for abortion. Bush's move means the federal government is paying for illegals to clog up emergency rooms--which means we're ALL paying billions to cover it, instead of a billion to build a wall that would stop it.

And if you think for a second people will buy your snow job about how 'Bush has never said' he'll grant legal status under his AMNESTY programs or 'Bush has never said' he'll pay for illegals' health care, you must think there are an awful lot of stupid Freepers.

The problem is the cost to find and deport most illegals would consume so much the federal budget that it is impractical so something else has to be done.

There's no need to spend a lot of money to find and deport illegal aliens. Instead, cut illegal aliens off from all taxpayer funded services while at the same time crack down hard on businesses that hire illegal aliens. With no jobs and no taxpayer funded freebies available to them, many illegal aliens will begin to voluntarily "deport" themselves back to their home countries. If there is a need for more foreign workers to fill jobs, we can increase the number of legal immigrants that we let in.

If CFG endorses him outright (it seems there is some confusion at the Club) then will be a first-tier candidate, adequately funded and a potential winner. And he would likely get my vote. That may not be enough to win the nomination this time. But if he stays on the stump and sticks to his conservative message...then it appears to me that your guy may well be the follow up to RR that we have been waiting for. Reagan ran (briefly) in 68, hard in 76 and then in 80 finally won. The persistent, optimistic conservative with a message will win eventually!

This may end up being very very fun!
