Inmates may be able to bond out with credit card

It's an all-too-common answer for those shopping at the mall and now it will be an answer for some at the Cook County Jail: "Charge it."

Inmates will soon be able to bond out if they can find a loved one with a credit card with a credit limit high enough to cover bail.

County commissioners passed a measure out of committee Monday that would allow courts to establish credit card payment systems. With a full board vote expected to easily pass next Tuesday, the new systems should be in place this summer.

And while many are lauding the no-risk program the county is using and the burden it could lift from an overcrowded jail, others caution that some could be pressed to post a bail they'll spend decades paying off, due to the high interest rates on some credit cards.

"I'm not going to sleep so good knowing there are going to be some people suffering because of the actions we're going to take here today," said Commissioner Jerry Butler, who cast the only vote against the new program.

There should be some perks for our slammer brethren. As the Most Reverend Jackson points out, many (most) of them are locked up because of the socioeconomic discrimination they've suffered. It's not their fault. It's ours.

That comes with Phase II, when the County Administrator begins issuing the cards secured by your family owned reaL estate.

I believe we're on to something here!
