ALBANY — Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi will today deliver a major speech on abortion — attempting to position himself in the political middle should he decide to challenge Eliot Spitzer for governor or seek another statewide office.
Suozzi, a pro-choice Democrat, will outline a three-year, $3 million plan to curtail abortions, including programs to assist women who have out-of-wedlock births.
Suozzi, a Roman Catholic, is expected to seek "common ground" with anti-abortion activists in the speech at Adelphi University in Garden City by emphasizing prevention, adoption services and help for unwed mothers........
"He's tackled many other big issues......Now he's willing to take on another big problem, reducing the need for abortions," said the source.
Political insiders say the speech is partly designed to position Suozzi as a middle-of-the-road Democrat and therefore different from many of his party's more liberal office holders.
Democratic insiders have compared Suozzi's planned action to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's recent moves toward the political center.
Some Democrats believe Suozzi may launch a long-shot primary challenge to Spitzer, the attorney general, for the party's gubernatorial nomination next year.
But other sources believe Suozzi, a lawyer and CPA, is really interested in running for the soon-to-be vacant attorney general's job.
Suozzi has been widely credited with pushing to reduce the burden of the huge Medicaid program on local governments and property tax payers. He's also won praise for sponsoring Fix Albany, a group that lobbies for state government reform.
But Suozzi's calls for reform also have angered many powerful Democrats, including Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver of Manhattan, who accuse him of grandstanding and undermining fellow Democrats.
Before he seeks statewide office, Suozzi must first win re-election this year.

He's probably gay, most "cute" Democrats are. He's no Roman Catholic either if he supports aborting a child's life for ANY reason.
