GM Daewoo files suit against Chinese auto company
5/9/2005, 10:41 a.m. ET
The Associated Press

BEIJING (AP) — Automaker GM Daewoo is suing Chinese carmaker Chery Automobile Co. for allegedly copying one of its vehicles, according to a newspaper report.

GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. is seeking 80 million yuan ($9.7 million) in compensation, alleging Chery's QQ mini car copied its Daewoo Matiz and Spark brands, which Chery denies, the China Daily reported.

The Beijing Number One Intermediate People's Court confirmed Sunday it accepted a lawsuit filed by GM Daewoo against Chery, according to the China Daily.

GM Daewoo initially sued Chery in December in Shanghai but the defendant objected on jurisdictional grounds, leading the Supreme People's Court to appoint the Beijing-based court to handle the case, the report said.

The Matiz was launched in the South Korean market in 1998, according to the bill of indictment, the paper says.

GM Daewoo, an Inchon, South Korea, unit of Detroit-based General Motors Corp., authorized Shanghai Automotive Co. to produce and sell the Spark in China in 2003 based on the Matiz's design and technology, the paper reports.

GM Daewoo also alleges Chery used a camouflaged Matiz car to pass tests and obtain authorization from the government to produce and sell QQ.

What?  If you can't trust the Chi-coms, who can you trust?
Maybe if we just set the entire plants up in China, then they'd quit stealing other people's technology.  I mean, being liked and well thought of is the most important thing for everyone, right?

You can't wait for American companies and American workers to be out of jobs? Not to mention every single industry that supports not only the auto, but just living day-to-day.

The American "Workers" in the Auto Industry have nobody but themselves to blame. BTW, They'll find something else to do.. Plenty of people retiring over the next decade.

Cheaper Vehicles, Cheaper Parts for Repair = Good for the World. Capitalism at its finest.

You have to admire the Chinese for their shrewdness. I hear the complaints of their currency cheating, but wouldn't you do the same if you were in their shoes?

These guys aren't dicking around, and America better wake up real soon, starting with the unions and the Pat Buchanan protectionists whackjobs.

Those retirees took pension payments in the future instead of current raises at one time.

I sincerely hope that your job is outsourced to a company overseas that can do it while paying their employees $2 a day, no benefits and no regulations whatsoever.

May it be so.

Outsourcing jobs and technology at it's best. What a heck of a price to pay.

If GM had any sense, they would just sell off Daewoo to the Chinese, and cut their losses.

That's capitalism my friend.

And the Anti-Capitalism left who are forcing corporations to take care of their employees and regulating everything are the ones that are putting us at a competitive disadvantage.

Here's a novel idea.. Pay the employees what they are worth to you.

Oh and I can guarantee you, my job will be outsourced overseas someday.. There's not a doubt about that, and guess what, I'll find ANOTHER JOB (Say what?!?) when that happens!

You know what, you're right.. I'm going to go out on Capital Hill later this afternoon and complain that there aren't enough T-shirt or horse-drawn buggy manufacturers. /sarcasm off.

It's simply stunning the number of people who believe that capitalism "runs to an end". Well maybe not considering the public education in this country.

They sold themselves to Fiat for $4.4 billion and got nothing in return. It'll be tough, but GM might still top this accomplishment.

I hear about this one letter different knockoff.

They are so much the same that the parts are interchangable. A door from a CheRy will fit on a CheVy.

It was a little bit sarcasm a little bit serious.

But in all reality.. They'll find something else to do, and when they do, they can afford their next car at a fraction of what it use to cost.

This shows how truly desperate GM is these days. Chery will be producing 5 cars to export to the US in 2007. The two that I have seen(crossover & hardtop convertible) were designed by Italian designers Bertone and Pinafarina respectively. Notice that neither designer is a Seoul brother.

Here are the Chery's:

Harsh, but true. Imagine when the unionists will actually have to compete for work, work a full eight hours, and be glad to find $8/hour with a basic medical benefit (co-paid, no dental or vision) and a week of vacation. I've watched several companies get taken down by unions, I've seen their harassment, I see 'seniority' sleeping on the job still, and I have zero sympathy; in their hearts they know what they do. And lump the high-tax, welfare statists right along with them.

As for the Chinese copying: SURPRISE! They consider us an enemy. Hello? Better watch their activities in our Southern Hemisphere, too. Don't they control the Panama Canal?

You have to admire the Chinese for their shrewdness.

You can admire the Red Chinese Communists if you like...You can admire Osama Bin Laden for his cunning...You may have admired Hitler for his consistancy...But most of us don't...I just wish you didn't do it FROM America...

I hear the complaints of their currency cheating, but wouldn't you do the same if you were in their shoes?

Must be a small world you live in...I believe most of us would rather leave this earth knowing we weren't known as a cheat...Thanks for your opinion...I was running low on toilet paper anyway...
