Brings a whole new meaning to "Card Battle Game" doesn't it?

I'm just catching up with this thread and saw this post about hotlinking.

"It seems that some FReepers were posting pictures of Kerry and Pelosi that were hosted on his website and he swapped the images on his own server because he didn't appreciate the bandwidth drain."

Hotlinking is never a wise thing to do. For one thing it is bandwidth theft and if it was done to me, I'd be screaming because I would be charged extra bucks over and above my allowed bandwidth. The other reason is because of the ability to swap images and mess with the person who's linking to them.

Case in point - a friend and I had our own websites and forums back in 2000. Some mutual friends got into a squabble with the VegSource leftwing activists and asked for my friend's help. He went to their forum and blasted the VegSource people. They retaliated by posting a copyrighted image which they'd grabbed from my friend's website. He switched images and altho it wasn't porn, it was very close. They complained to Tripod, which hosted his website and Tripod took his site down. We wrote a lot of letters explaining what happened and they did restore his site, but we went through a real hassle because of this.

So a word to the wise - Don't hotlink!

And when posters look at your site, they don't show up as being from FR. They show up as being from, say, road runner.

Nope. If an image is hotlinked it'll show as the calling web page. I believe this guy, given how I have personally experienced how hard FR can slam hotlinked images. I think we beat the hell out of his BW and he either swapped images or leech protected to default those adorable images.

What is "leech protecting"?

Use small words and speak slowly.

Actually, Darksheare, it isn't improbable.........like any webmaster monitoring his site, this person no doubt saw a bunch of referrals from here to his site suddenly appear once the link was posted earlier today. Being curious at all the referrals he's come check it out and, having read the suspicion being voiced here, decided to sign up and address them. It is very probable to me .. in fact it sounds like something I myself might do in the same circumstances.... and while you know I'm a bit nuts, I'm not a total whack job! ;^)

As I noted in my post at http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1399442/posts?page=1072#1072 this guy didn't claim to have posted the images here ... just to have replaced ones that were being hot-linked from his server with them. another thing I would have done.....only with something a lot less 'graphic' to be sure.

As a webmaster I am able to track & view exactly where any of my site's visitors came to my site from ...

LOL.

Hope your floundering around doesn't cut into your house cleaning time!

Truth be told ,I am afraid of floundering around the Internet and coming across more hideous pictures, as posted by the troll!

Keep floundering and you will come up with something!

Yes, am aware of that.
But he was saying that not only the hotlinking, but people looking at his site were shwing up as FR.

I'm so naive I never even thought of the possibility

Like I said, you would be surprised.

A lot of activity takes place just beneath the radar. For example, there are many newer posters (date ranges from today-90 days ago) who frequent threads that are about specific racial issues. These posters are slick. They'll only say enough to where it won't genereate an outrage, but it's still heated comment(s).

I say this to demonstrate that people are not stupid. You can't come out and spew overtly racist speech here, so what do they do? Multiple user accounts.

Think about it.

Whoever this is I don't think is your average troll. This person or persons have been here for a long time. A long, long time. What gives this away? A true newbie, even if they lurk for a while, still has to get the lay of the land as far as posting threads and replies. If you have a straight up newbie coming across as experienced, what does that tell you?

You need a cigarette in a long holder as well.

Thanks, I'll put it on my official list, along with shoulder pads. Also, I'll have to brush up on the lingo....Wonder if there is a translator website that converts current English usage to 40's (?) detective movies!

But you see them as 'road runner' and their ISP/IP addy.
They don't show up as "FR".
You can see where they navved from, but they don't show up as being the site.
