Schiavo Findings Won't Be Rushed
The St. Petersburg Times ^ | May 9, 2005 | Leonora LaPeter

Schiavo findings won't be rushed

Despite conflicting calls for thoroughness and quick results, Jon Thogmartin won't let appeals from the public force his hand.

LARGO - People around the world have talked about the life and death of Terri Schiavo, but Pinellas-Pasco Medical Examiner Jon Thogmartin will get the last word.

For the past month, he has been working on her autopsy. She has taken over his office and consumed his working hours. He appeared for an interview in blue scrubs, looking every bit the wiry medical examiner with his bald head and tiny wire-rimmed glasses.

"That's her and that's her," he says, pointing to piles of documents and boxes of slides stacked all over his office.

..

Thogmartin, 41, knows Schiavo's autopsy will probably be the most publicized of his career. He won't talk about it until he is done and estimates it will be two or three more weeks.

He has received hundreds of letters and e-mails about the brain-damaged woman who died March 31, 13 days after her feeding tube was removed. Many ask him to look for signs she wasn't brain-dead or signs of abuse, among the allegations made during the protracted battle between her parents and her husband over whether to keep her alive.

"They are of no consequence to me," says Thogmartin of the letters.

The lively Texan, publicity shy and fiercely protective of his wife's and child's privacy, is known for doing everything by the book. He denied requests from Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, and her husband, Michael Schiavo, to allow their own pathologists to observe the autopsy.

"It is routine in cases of criminal importance to not allow any biased pathology advocates in the morgue," he said. "I'm the independent pathologist."

Terri's cause of death is obvious...

She was murdered by the death lobby with the help of the mainstream media and millions of Americans who can no longer think for themselves.

Question to the American Public: Is it OK to murder disabled people?
Answer from public: Why of course it is!

Question to the American public: How do you justify your answer?
Answer from public: (scratches head)(fluffs bangs) Well...uh...because Dan Blather said so...yea...that's it...Blather said so.

Yes those are very good facts. I agree with your post. However, electrolyte imbalances are caused by malnutrition, which may, or may not have been caused by improper eating habits, dehydration, etc. If this imbalance did not contribute to her condition thank you for correcting me.

There are no medical facts anywhere to indicate that Terri had an eating disorder. That rumor originated with Michael and was propagated throughout the media by single reporter. Neither Michael nor the reporter could produce a single piece of hard evidence that even hints that Terri had an eating disorder.

To say that you are going to believe that Terri had an eating disorder until someone proves otherwise is the same as saying that you are going to believe that aliens killed Terri until somebody proves otherwise. There is zero evidence that either one of these scenarios ever occurred.

The public is going to have to realize that reporters rarely investigate anymore. They just take whatever the AP hands them and they run with it regardless of whether its true or not.

Rumor mongering by the media does not equal medical fact.

WOW Gimme, you are really off the deep end aren't you... hmm where shall I start with your rant.. how about here...Terri was alive and well, she just couldnt feed herself

Alive and well? Well.. yes Terri was alive but well? Give me a break. IF Terri was well or even getting better at all, she certainly would have been able to respond to a stimulus of ANY kind and probably would have been able to feed herself or even for that fact have the ability to eat SOLID FOOD that someone else spoon fed her. Yes on occasion she was able to be forcefed some pudding... if that was my condition I would hardly try to fool anyone by saying I was "well."

She was not given a fair chance for survival

Is 16 years of inactivity and inability to respond to stimulus not enough time to show signs of improvement. I saw nothing but deterioration of her condition. Oh yeah.. weve all seen the carefully edited video of her responding to a balloon. Where's the rest of the video? I mean, I am sure there had to be more than 15 seconds of video of all this improvement and active motor skills of hers. I won't even start in on the Schindler's. Only point out the fact that Michael was the person at her bedside on a regular occurrence. Her parents maybe visited monthly... OH.. but I am sure youve heard otherwise right?

Correct! I believe that aliens killed Terri!

They use the following planet Earth names:

Michael Schiavo -- George Felos -- George Greer !!! ;-))

I agree... who can trust the media. But that is where every arguement is coming from on these posts for either side. I am on neither side, an electrolyte imbalance CAN be caused by an eating disorder. I will believe only what I hear from the doctor performing the autopsy. Thanks for you quality post.

Autopsies don't take this long. I wonder why the delay

They do take this long and it was so stated right at the start. There is no "delay":

Schiavo Autopsy Completed

April 2, 2005

excerpt:

Results from the brain-damaged woman's autopsy, which was completed Friday, were not be released for several weeks, according to the medical examiner's office.

The autopsy could show that the TyDBol man was floating around in her head and there will still be people that believe that she was just a moment away from a full recovery.

There is no evidence that her collapse was caused by an eating disorder.

She was using a tube because her dear husband refused therapy to teach her to eat.

It's really not that hard to find the facts about this case.

There never seemed to be an attempt to see if she could recover.

There are no medical facts anywhere to indicate that Terri had an eating disorder. That rumor originated with Michael and was propagated throughout the media by single reporter.

It is based on the malpractice lawsuit which elicited testimony from doctors.

It is not mandatory that you accept the findings, but it is wrong to say it is mere rumor based on a single reporter.

She was using a tube because her dear husband refused therapy to teach her to eat.

Teach her to eat? How can you teach someone to eat with NO motor skills, NO function of their arms or any other portion of her body, mainly the BRAIN. How can you teach someone to eat when their brain can't even teach them how to hold a freaking spoon or voluntarily swallow for that matter. You will have to do better than that for me to buy that explanation.

If Terri had any hand in this by lifestyle choices, then she bears some of the accountability.

She also entered into an agreement with a man, maybe a reprehensible man, but nontheless, she became one with someone. They became advocates and voices for each other. When one voice fell silent, possibly by her own doing, the remaining voice then spoke for her, including her wishes if those were what she wanted. He now for better or worse was her voice.

The moral of this story is many. But two are, if you have a hand in your situation, then you bear some accountability for it. And beware who you are getting in bed with with regard to marriage.

There are many facts in this case. Both sides have been very selective in what has gone forward. I believe I read one where one of the treatments that was done actually cause more harm than good. That was early on and was a horrible setback. I believe that was one of the post event pictures where she actually looked like a normal individual rather than the poor person laying in the bed during the balloon video. The procedure that took place after the photo was a horrible setback.

She had hypokalemia when she was taken to the hospital. That is an undisputed fact.

And you saw her....when? As best I can tell, she wasn't allowed therapy. You can claim she was brain dead but since her devoted husband didn't allow cameras around, it's kinda hard for me and you to properly opine on these matters.

IOW you are trying to convince me using your ignorance as evidence.

Well Appy, I was going to agree to your post until I read the last line. You do have a good point that you and I have a hard time to voice a quality opinion, not being around her and all, however, calling someone who opposes yours and nearly everyone elses viewpoint on this thread ignorant is a little harsh. You have no more facts to report than I do. You have seen all the footage that I have, I don't believe it is ignorant to say that Terri, even with hours and hours of therapy would be able to care for herself in ANY possible way, including feeding herself. I am not trying to convince you of anything, via ignorance or fact. I am simply stating my opinion as I listen to yours. Lets not resort to name calling and simply continue to state our opinions. You have a nice day.
