Lloyd Cutler, Former Counsel to Carter and Clinton, Dies at 87

May 8 (Bloomberg) -- Lloyd Cutler, White House counsel for presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton and an influential figure in Washington for decades, died today in Washington at age 87, his daughter Beverly said.

Cutler had been battling with complications from broken hip, she said.

In addition to serving as a presidential adviser, Cutler was a founding partner of the Washington law firm of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering. The firm merged last year with the Boston firm Hale & Dorr to become Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale & Dorr.

More recently, Cutler was a member of a presidential commission that investigated the failure of the U.S. to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

President George W. Bush issued a statement saying Cutler ``served our Nation with dedication and distinction throughout his extraordinary career.'' Cutler was ``a devoted public servant who had a profound influence on the legal profession,'' Bush said.

Cutler represented clients of all kinds, including CBS, Bethlehem Steel Corp., American Express Co., Pan American World Airways and the Long Island Railroad, the Washington Post said. The Post was also one of his clients.

His first wife, Louise Winslow Howe, died in 1988. His survivors include his second wife, Polly Kraft, the widow also of columnist Joseph Kraft, and four children from his first marriage, Deborah Notman of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts; Lloyd Cutler Jr. of Denver; Louisiana Cutler of Alaska and Beverly Cutler, also of Alaska.

``He had a deeply satisfying and fulfilling life,'' Beverly Cutler said in an interview.

Yep. Though I don't mourn one bit for this man, I do feel a little regret at the passing of what may be the last of the gentleman Democrats.

Contrast the way Lloyd Cutler carried himself with the current pack of wolves --the Carviles, the Stephanopouli, the Chris LeHeinouses.

OTOH, I guess Cutler was able to maintain that courtly façade because he had other people do the dirty work.
