A senior European Commissioner marked VE Day yesterday by accusing Eurosceptics of risking a return to the Holocaust by clinging to "nationalistic pride".
Margot Wallstrom, a Swede and the commissioner who must sell the draft constitution to voters, argued that politicians who resisted pooling national sovereignty risked a return to Nazi horrors of the 1930s and 1940s.
Mrs Wallstrom, vice-president of the commission for institutional relations and communications, was speaking in the former Jewish ghetto of Terezin in the Czech Republic.
She blamed the Second World War on "nationalistic pride and greed, and international rivalry for wealth and power". The EU had replaced such rivalry with an historic agreement to share national sovereignty.
Her fellow commissioners also issued a joint declaration, stating that EU citizens should pay tribute to the dead of the Second World War by voting Yes to the draft constitution for Europe.
The commissioners also gave the EU sole credit for ending the Cold War, making no mention of the role of Nato and the United States.
Richard Shepherd, the Tory MP for Aldridge-Brownhills, said it was "breathtaking" to link Nazism to the defence of national sovereignty.
"It's a monstrous rewriting of history to promote a profoundly undemocratic project."
For those who want to read Mrs Wallströms musings on the net, here is the address to her blog: http://weblog.jrc.cec.eu.int/page/wallstrom
I expect some major flaming from british eurosceptics.

These people are the true enemy. Let them go down the drain of history weighed down by their welfare obligations that they expect the rest of the world to pick up. If they ratify the constitution giving up their soveriegnty to a bunch of un-elected moonbats in brussles, I have no sympathy for their plight.
Oh, and short the EURO :)
Dream on.
She said this in a former Jewish ghetto? Could this be interpreted as "vote for the EU constitution or we'll kill more Jews"? Tough luck for them if so, there's not 6 million Jews left in Europe this time.
The commissioners also gave the EU sole credit for ending the Cold War, making no mention of the role of Nato and the United States.
What a diplomat, what a way with words she has. She's now a vice-president of the EU commission and in charge of trying to sell the EU draft constituion to voters?
Wow, that thing is shot dead already with a big-mouthed idiot like her in charge of selling it to the voters!
Talk about communist ruling the world efforts.
The french will pass the contitution even if the ballot boxes have to be stuffed. (They will probably use Saddams election manager)
BTW doesn't france have mandatory voting.

If it is a threat the Eurocrats will find out that the Jews will be able to fight back and win!

So, we now have the verdict. It was not the US, Nato, or even historical figures like Ronald Reagan, pope John Paul, or Lesch Walesa, not even the darling of the left Michail Gorbachev who ended the Cold War. It was the EU - which wasn't even instituted until 1994!
No, Belgium has compulsory voting, but the Belgians aren't allowed to vote on the constitution. The reason was that a left-wing party coplained that the Vlams Belang were had started to talk about the risk of Turkey joining the EU under the new rules of the constitution.
According to the Belgian parliament these questions have nothing to do with each other. Strangely enough, most europhiles are trying to sell the constitution by arguing that unless it is accepted we cannot bring in more countries in the EU - something which seems to be a very good argument to vote no.
The French are going to cheat - no doubt about it. They don't even have to stuff the ballot boxes, except in their colonies in the Western hemisphere. In that way they'll know excactly how many votes are needed,
(That's the way Mitterrand managed to win the Maastricht referendum 1994!)
darn.
Greece has mandatory voting but they did the "Parlament will decide" trick too. (and they have conservatives controling their parlament!)
bttt
Forgot to mention: Mrs Wallström tried to convince her countrymen to accept the euro- she failed. And so we will not be allowed to vote in any new EU-referenda.
Vote for the European Union... It hasn't killed anyone (yet).
Objectively, it is the post-nationalist Tranzis promoting the EU who are risking a new holocaust and the dhimmitude of all of Europe.
