Sen. George Allen Jockeys for '08
Sunday Morning Talk. ^ | May 8, 2005

How much does Senator George Allen really want to cozy up to Pat Robertson? Pat Robertson's comments on ABC This Week, on May 1st, about the judiciary being more dangerous than Islamic terrorists has made waves all week, including references to it, today, on Meet the Press and FOX News Sunday, along with a new moveon.org commercial.

Robertson's rhetoric about terrorists didn't particularly rattle me. Seemed like the same 'ole Robertson to me, trying to maintain his relevance by acting increasingly loopier, as the years go on. Seemed kind of sad and pathetic, actually.

What I found of interest were his comments, last week, about Bill Frist not being in his favor as Presidential material in '08, but saying kind things about Rudy. On FOX News Sunday, today, George Allen also seemed to be currying Robertson's and the Christian Right's favor and endorsement, when it was noted he spoke at the commencement, on Saturday, of the university Robertson founded. Allen then went on to defend Robertson's comments, made on the May 1st edition of This Week

IMO, Senator Allen will make a great conservative candidate and president.

I am sure we will hear from those who will tell us Allen is "not that bright"

Hummmmm didn't they say that about Reagan and GWB?

Were we not told how brilliant Carter (the nuclear engineer) and Clintoon (the Rhodes Scholar) were?

Hummmmmmmmmmmm. I am no fan of W these days but compared to the two brightest Presidents of the 20th century I will vote for a rock for President any day.

Allen looks like the best conservative candidate for 2008. Do he and Condi Rice get along well?

I had a brief chat with a sharp and savvy conservative GOP insider two weeks ago when I was on vacation near Wash DC. He told me then to watch out for Allen, that his star was about to rise fast.

rice has no elective experience and is pro-affirmative action and pro-choice. that would not get a lot of conservative christian votes. many conservatives believe there will be better candidates for VP in 2008.

I was impressed with Allen's composure on Fox today. I particularly liked his repeated insistance that Republicans need to get after the dims and show somebackbone. That plays REAL well here in fly-over country. People between the coasts like politician who aren't obsessed with being everything to everybody and who will actually take a stand on issues. Allen looks to be leading the pack here.

Frist has a slinky for a backbone.

I would be happier with a stricter abortion platform but I have always said if I can get 98% of the abortion made illegal I would settle down about the 2% or less that are a result of rape or incest. One of the reasons I do not accept the prolife argument that abortions should be legal is because of rare or incest. When I offer the compromise it because clear they don't mean it, it is just their last arrow in the quiver.

Excuse me but I mean "rape" not "rare", and "because" should read "becomes".

In a sign that US Senator George Allen Jr. (R-VA) is planning a 2008 White House run, he just hired Dick Wadhams to be his new Chief of Staff. Wadhams, who ran the campaign that just ousted Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD), is viewed as one of today's hottest GOP political strategists.

"rice has no elective experience ..."

"Note that serving as Vice President or U. S. Senator hurts a candidates chances of being elected President. In fact, both of the major party candidates in the 1960 and 1968 Presidential elections had negative electabilities. Our formula suggests that had either major party nominated a candidate with no government experience for either of these elections, that candidate would have won."

Just another view on the "no previous elective office" thought.
