Flynn denies communion to sash wearers
Star Tribune ^ | May 6, 2005 | Darlene Prois

Responding to a directive from the Vatican, Archbishop Harry Flynn has advised all parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis to deny communion to anyone wearing a rainbow-colored sash.

For the past four years, supporters of the Rainbow Sash Alliance USA -- a group of Catholics who are active in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community -- have worn the sashes to receive communion at the St. Paul Cathedral on Pentecost Sunday, the anniversary date of the group's founding in 1998.

Last year the service was disrupted when a group of 40 laymen protested the activists receiving communion by kneeling in the aisles in an attempt to block the path to the altar.

The sashes are worn as a symbol of celebration of God-given sexuality, according to Brian McNeill, an organizer of the alliance, who lives in Minneapolis. He said the sashes also represent an invitation to the church to open dialogue on the issue of human sexuality.

As he has in the past, McNeill wrote to Flynn in early April to advise him of the group's intended presence at the Pentecost service on May 15.

In a reply sent Monday, Flynn told McNeill that he had received a directive from the Vatican declaring that wearing the sash during communion is unacceptable.

Flynn said the sash has increasingly been perceived as a protest against church teaching, and asked that group members remove their sashes before receiving communion.

It is their argument that Free Will is not involved because they are "born that way". Pure poppycock, of course, but you will argue that one 'till you are blue in the face, and not win. This is the one rock upon which all of their arguments rest, so it must be accepted without question.

Agreed. This is raw in-your-face confrontation by homosexuals flouting their deviant, vile, disgusting ways. They defy the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and the Holy Bible.

Why should some receive special consideration just because of the manner in which they choose to have sex?

Oh - if refused, `they will return to their pews and remain standing'. "We're here, we're queer, get used to it!"

BTW, Ted Kennedy should approach the rail wearing an aquamarine sash.

To quote Abraham Lincoln:

"I do hot hope God is on my side, I hope that I am on his."

It is God's law deal with it.

This new Pope is kicking butt!

Wow! If this Pope keeps this up, I might just become active in the church again.

The Pope is saying that Communion is not the place for perverts to push their political agenda. If you wish to commit the sin of the perversion outside Church He cannot stop you but bringing it to the altar where you accept the Eucharist is another thing. I dont know why he needed a word from the Pope to get him to do what was right to begin with.

As a Catholic if you go to confession you must confess to having sex outside marriage I suppose its a catch 22 for you since you cannot be married in the church but no more a catch 22 than confessing to using birth control by married couples. Both are hypocritical since they say their penance and promise to amend their lives with no intention of doing so. However they dont wear sashes flaunting their sin when they accept the Euchariist.

You know, I don't know if people are genetically predisposed or not. But even if people ARE "born that way," they still have Free Will when they choose to act upon their urges.

The Church doesn't condemn homosexuals just for BEING homosexual. The Church condemns homosexual BEHAVIOR. Just as it condemns *heterosexual* behavior when it comes to fornication, adultery, etc.

The sashes are a definite slap at Church authority and its teachings. I honestly wish these people who are SO dissatisfied would just change denominations.

I'm so happy with Pope Benedict XVI!!

I am sexually oriented towards committing adultery. I suppose I was born that way.

When I was in ECUSA, it never occurred to be that a sacrament for bessing the motel room keys should be developed.

The fact that the church would condemn my acting on my sexual orientation, should I ever do so, is part of the support structure that promotes fidelity to my wife (plus the fact that she keeps the kitchen shears sharp).

What's the difference between me and the rainbow sashers, that they should be acclaimed in public?

I guess the rainbow folks didn't read the story of the rainbow and what happened right after. They need to understand the Curse of Ham.

Uh, right. Sometimes all I can say is wow.

"McNeill said. "The church is saying it only wants closeted gay people going to communion. That's troubling to me as a gay man. I think God would want me to be proud of who she created me to be.""

I have news for this person: those who believes God is female are NOT Catholics.

The only thing the Sodomites understand is pure and unadulterated intolerance.
Just look at where misdirected Tolerance has gotten us over the last 10 years........
Rallies in schools celebrating Sodomites.
Inculcation of K thru 4th grade children in Sodomy Lifestyles.
Severe restriction on Normal people toward "Tolerance" of disease causing behavior through abnormal Lifestyle.
Etc., Etc., Etc.
See what Criminal Homosexual Abuse by Catholic Priests have wrought over the last 50 years, near total destruction of the Catholic Church.

because they are "born that way"

If they are really born that way they'll have a couple major problems in the not too distant future. The genetic causes of diseases are currently being identified. If the difference is in their genes (instead of merely in their jeans) we should be able to identify it and test for it in a few years.

What will the, presently pro-abortion, gay lobby say if prospective parents choose to abort their gay inviable tissue masses and try again for one who'll perpetuate the family line?

Identifying genetic abnormalities is an important start, but the dream is to be able to fix them. We should start realizing that dream within a generation. What will (presumably straight) parents decide when their baby's genetic profile test turns up gay? Leave him to be discriminated against or convert him to the straight norm and win grandchildren as a bonus prize? The next gay generation could shrink faster than their HIV generation (and probably with less medical expenses.)

"I am sexually oriented towards committing adultery. I suppose I was born that way."

I use to think that I was competitively oriented to violence until I sat on a bully's chest and started to choke the life out of him. He was bigger than me, he and his friend were pushing me around, I knocked him down and was about to kill him. But as his eyes bulged and his face turned blue, I felt sorry for him.

I guess I was not born that way.

It was such a young age that I'm not sure that it was even "reason" that stopped me from ending his life ("Mom and dad aren't going to be happy about this."). It may have been that Spirit I received in Baptism that I listened to instead of my own desires.

I asked for a truce and received it from both kids. For the rest of the day, we played as best friends.

"Removing a sash isn't enough, they must cease thier sinful ways. "

I'm afraid I agree. The non-penitent perverters of God's Church and Law will now simply mock His representatives on earth by proudly wearing their sacred sash all through mass, take it off, and receive the Body of the Most Holy One into their corrupt temples.
Sorry, I am not at all ecstatic over the words from the Archbishop.

Anyone practicing birth-control by artificial means who confesses it but does not quit the practice is cut off from all sanctifying grace until confessing his/her insincerity in the first place. But since they can not be readily identified coming up to communion, it would take a special soul reading priest to be able to deny them Holy Communion! BTW, anyone practicing artificial birth-control without confessing it is in about the same boat.
