I think you are right. He brings the "swing" voters out in droves. His Vietnam-era service is a definite plus to any ticket. Not conservative enough for me, but probably a good bet to hold the White House for us in 2008.

The MSM props up McCrisis during the run-up phase and in the primaries so that they can do what they've always wanted to do -- unload on him during the general election phase (with his ton of dirty baggage and his proven disdain for Christian conservatives) -- solely to elect the Dum candidate. Period.
