AG's office may probe hate mail

AUGUSTA The Attorney General's Office is deciding whether to launch a formal investigation into three pieces of hate mail sent to Sen. Ethan Strimling, D-Portland, at the State House. Chuck Dow, the spokesman for Attorney General Steven Rowe, said Friday that Rowe's office is "reviewing" the mailings, all three of which have April postmarks from Portland.
The unsigned mailings contain derogatory references to Jews and chastise Strimling, whose father is Jewish, for supporting gay rights and for proposing a crackdown on assault weapons.
None of the mailings makes a plainly stated threat against Strimling. One postcard purports to be from the "No Warning Headshot Photo Lab for Freedom" in Portland. The other postcard says it is from the "Rural Maine White Power Movement" in Naples. The third mailing, a flier, had no return address.
Dow said the mailings "contain strong evidence of bias." He said the state's civil-rights law prohibits violence or threats of violence motivated by a bias based on religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation or other factors, but he did not say that any of the mailings violated that law.
Strimling said he received one piece of hate mail last week and two more this week.
"I'm not sure how to react," he said Friday. "I've never received anything like this before."
He said the mailings are "very disconcerting" and getting them "certainly doesn't make you feel very comfortable."

I think the Democrat politician got this idea from a black college student who did the same thing so she could be transfered to another college.
The religious right must be making some headway in the area, so I think this politician has to try to make himself look like a saintly victim , while trying to demonize a non existent "zealot hate monger".
Democrats don't believe in right and wrong, or any moral absolute, so I'm sure any activity that may be questionable would be considered good for the cause.
The letters should be checked to see if the heading on the top of the letters say "From the office of Sen. Ethan Strimling."
How would a casual detractor know so much about his family? It's either him or someone who is obsessed with him.
Yeah. Something doesn't sound right in this story, does it? Sniff sniff.
Well, that narrows it down. The author of the mailings is obviously a Democrat.
Actually, it stinks.
I think that the liberal Press Herald is trying to make up for the embarrassment they caused this guy when the built him up for the AWB bill. First, the story states there are no threats in the mailings, secondly that AG MIGHT investigate it - which is a far cry from IS investigating it. The paper is making a "problem" out of whole cloth.
I smell a 'rat.
