Place several fresh mint springs in a bowl, 1 tsp. of sugar and 1/4 ounce of water.
Crush the leaves with a spoon and stir well. Fill a chilled tumbler with with crushed ice, add Bourbon, and top with strained mixture.
Add a layer of crushe d ice. Continue at least one more time, topping with ice.
Pour more Bourbon on top. Garnish with fresh mint springs.

Here's a slightly different method perfected from years of trial and error...hehe.
Fresh sprigs of spearmint sprigs...new tips are best if you can get them.(we're lucky enough to have them growing in the meadow). Place them in an enamel pan and pour boiling water over them to cover the sprigs, cover pan and steep for 20 minutes. Add sugar to taste to the mint water and use this to add to the bourbon and crushed ice. Key to mint juleps is crushed ice and metal glasses. It is amazing how long the drink stays iced in a metal glass. Don't know the physics of it but it does work.
