Arizona may become the 28th state to make English its official language, if Gov. Janet Napolitano signs the bill that's now waiting on her desk. The Arizona Senate gave the measure final approval this week.
Mauro E. Mujica, the chairman of a group called U.S. English Inc., urged Napolitano (D) to sign the bill.
"English remains the key tool for full participation in American life," Mujica said in a press release. He said more than 500,000 Arizonans struggle because they can't speak English, which prevents them from getting better jobs, helping their children with homework, or speaking with their neighbors.
"This legislation would create a long-awaited language policy to bring together all Grand Canyon State residents on the road to English fluency," Mujica said.
Five years ago, Arizona voters approved an initiative that replaced most bilingual education programs with "English immersion" programs in public schools. The results have been "outstanding," Mujica said.
"Last summer, the state announced that students enrolled in English immersion classes outperformed students enrolled in bilingual programs at all grade levels," he noted; and he said applying a "common language policy" to the entire state is the "logical next step."
"Arizona should never become an English-only state, but it also should never become an English-optional state," Mujica concluded. "Signing official English legislation into law would uphold that important American value."

Political Correctness on the matter belongs on the trash heap.
"would" is the key word. It ain't gonna pass. The legislators have no guts.
The demo-rat Gov. will never sign this. She has too much to loose. It'll piss off the reclaim America for mexico crowd!
I wonder how much money a state ( the taxpayers ) would save by printing all documents , signs etc.. in english only?
It passed and is sitting on the governor's desk. I'm betting that she won't sign it.

NO WAY will she sign it but the question is whether she will veto it or just let it become law . . . My bet is that she will veto.
It isn't passed until she signs it.
SI
A suggestion, it you're going to be a fervent advocate for the English as the official language, correct spelling might increase your credibility. "She has too much to loose?"
