Maybe you should try actually reading the article:

When a teacher told him to hang up, he refused. He said he told the teacher, "This is my mom in Iraq. I'm not about to hang up on my mom." Parham said the teen's suspension was based on his reaction to the teacher's request. He said the teen used profanity when taken to the office.

That sounds pretty rational to me. He used profanity only when his Mother called back and they refused to let him answer the phone. I'd use profanity too.

The bottom line is he acted rationally to teachers who were acting irrationally. If my mother or father called me from war and this might be the last time I ever spoke to them, there's be nothing that would keep me from talking to them. I commend this boy. Ironically enough, if the boy refused to listen to a lecture about gay rights, although his teachers ordered him too, you'd all be taking up a collection to help him. You know I'm right.

I did read the article and it is clear that this boy mouthed off to and disrespected a teacher. He was told to get off the phone and essentially said, "I'm not about to." Regardless of the details, you simply do not do this. Even though the details that proceeded the refusal were important and should have been considered, once the teacher hears what equates to "screw you, I'm going to do whatever I want" all bets are off after that.

If the boy refused to listen to a lecture about gay rights, although his teachers ordered him too, you'd all be taking up a collection to help him.

...only if the teacher's actions violated an established desire by the parents to not have their child attend such an event.

You characterize a teenager's cussing out of adult authority figures who are charged with maintaining order in a public high school as rational. That is a horrible characterization. If I cussed out all of the people who have authority over me who should be cussed out, I would be both jobless and homeless. Sometimes you have to suck it up and deal, until you can rationally convince your superiors that you are indeed right. This is a valuable less that a young person should learn at a young age.
