Recooping a Reputation (Farmers, Peta, & Pamela)

Oh Booy, does he have a bone to pick with Pamela Anderson. So Murray Booy, a second-generation Ontario chicken farmer, is issuing a challenge to the Canadian-born sexpot over her cruelty campaign launched against KFC restaurants. Standing on his Aylmer spread, he offers: "Come stay at my farm Pamela Anderson ... I'll put you to work and you can see if any of my chickens are mistreated."

The name of that farm his dad bought in '78? "Rising Star"!

Last week, Anderson called for a boycott of KFC, claiming suppliers mistreat the birds they slaughter. It prompted a small, peckish band of animal rights protesters to picket outside the Toronto shareholders meeting of KFC Canada on Wednesday. It also led John Bitove, chairman and CEO of KFC Canada operator Priszm Canadian Income Fund, to ship off a letter to the former Baywatch beauty, suggesting they have lunch "anywhere, anytime" so he can set her mind at ease.

She declined his cocky offer.

But Booy, head of the Chicken Farmers of Ontario -- the producers responsible for filling the colonel's buckets in this province -- now wants to feather the nest some more. A chance for the star to come live the simple life, down on his farm.

A few days of hard work around his place, he insists, would dispel what he sees as bird-brained notions that Canadian chicken producers are up to no good.

Booy doesn't sell to KFC, but he notes the systems and regulations of fellow farmers under his wing who do, are identical. And when you attack one, you attack the entire flock.

His two-level, climate-controlled, 60-metre-long barn is now home to 11,750 chickens that are not penned. This latest batch will be shipped out to a processor next week.

"The myth pushed by people like Pamela Anderson and (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is they're held in small spaces, on farms run by huge conglomerates," Booy, a father of three, says.

There are more than 1,100 chicken farms in Ontario -- "and they're all run by families like mine," he adds.

He cringes against the accusation the chickens are abused or even super-sized with hormones.

"My chicken's breasts, unlike Pamela Anderson's, are 100% natural," he points out.

If she ever wants to take up the challenge -- a spokesman for the star was not available last night -- all Booy asks is that Anderson be wrapped in plastic. Or at least her feet, to stop any contamination within his mammoth chicken barn.

Booy believes even his wife of 15 years -- and likely every male farmer within flocking distance -- would see the value of an Anderson sleepover.

The code of conduct Canadian chicken producers follow -- though it's still not compulsory -- was set up with the help of the SPCA, vets and the province, and means his stock is treated humanely for its 10 weeks on earth, he counters.

"(Anderson) is just looking for publicity, and PETA just wants people to stop eating meat -- but people will continue to eat it because it's safe and good for you," Booy says.

But her campaign has caused a stir among fellow chicken farmers. And at least one veteran producer -- who has sold to KFC -- says while Anderson is misinformed about much of the cruelty, it doesn't mean she's entirely out to lunch.

"She's right and she's wrong," says the local chicken farmer, who didn't want to be named.

If there is a lingering chance of abuse, he claims, it can come at the hands of chicken catchers who arrive at night to pick up the birds and truck them to processing plants. They work by hand in almost total darkness to keep the critters docile.

But the farmer has seen more than a few underpaid and uneducated catchers kick, toss and break the wings and legs of chickens. While there's been advances in weeding out these cruel catchers, the source says more work has to be done before the industry can wash its hands of criticism. It could mean putting additional money into better pay for handlers and improved shipping methods.

"Everything has to advance ... can be made better," he argues.

Though he adds, his chickens are still fed, housed and tended better than some poor kids in Ontario.

Back on his farm, Booy says he's sure Anderson, should she come, wouldn't find anything to turn up her nose at.

He doesn't believe there's anything wrong in the way KFC, and average consumers, get their fingers on chicken. If there's anything foul in the wind, he says, a clucking bird under an arm, it's Anderson's agenda and career choices.

Wouldn't we all? :) I wouldn't mind being within "flocking" distance. ;)

"My chicken's breasts, unlike Pamela Anderson's, are 100% natural," he points out.

I think that's the best quote in the whole article - may even become a tagline...

...the only drawback would be that you would be infested with an incurable sexually transmitted disease for the rest of your life.
