It is absolutely the business of the buyer. These horses are probably in poor health, unable to become domesticated, lame, etc. If the numbers of feral horses and burros are not managed then property damage and illness ensues. Most, if not all, of a horse is utilized in processing. There is very little waste.

Well, back in the late 80s, early 90s, there was a west coast meat packing plant that had a contract to supply US Military bases with beef - they substituted horse on several occasions, and finally got busted for it.
Speaking as one of the GIs who ate horse, and didn't realize it, I have to say that I never noticed a difference.

Ok, found Cavel listed with active licensing at the USDA. They just reopened in April after they place was burned down.
15849 E --- Cavel International --- 108 Harvestore Drive --- DeKalb, IL 60115 --- Slaughter/ Cutting --- Equine --- 15, T
So they are not in business illegally.
I also saw they are listed on a 'Eligible Plant List for Mexico'.
I would guess, our regulations in the slaughter industry is MUCH MORE HUMANE than if they went to Mexico.

I'm not sure if I could eat a horse.
Wild herds have to be managed thought, right?

I ate horse without knowing it in Nevada. Ate dog in Kunsan, South Korea. Ate raw rattlesnake working with air rescue - it's protein.

Did you ever have the urge to count by moving your foot?
(sarcasm)
I guess if they mixed the horsemeat with beef, you probably wouldn't have noticed the difference. But then you can the say the same with most any kind of meat.
I heard about them selling loosing greyhounds for meat years ago. They showed it on TV on a news show. A truckfull of dead greyhounds being shipped off for food.

I know, they are meat.
They just seem like such a noble animal to me.
In the sense of herd management, numbers need to be controlled to ensure healthy herds. So I do understand that.
I'm 100% against killing and wasting any animal. So utilizing it for meat would be respectful.
RAW rattlesnake? Did you not have enough time to build a fire and need instant nourishment?

RAW rattlesnake? Did you not have enough time to build a fire and need instant nourishment? There are times when you can't have a fire. We were in a cold camp, no lights, no smoke, no sign that we were there.

I was USAF. I was working with Air Rescue in an exercise - opposition was looking for us, heat, fire, smoke would have been an arrow pointing to us. So we were in a cold camp. No light, no fire. Eating rattlesnake was a challenge to those of us that weren't Air Rescue - we were playing shot down pilots and they wanted to see how far they could push us. Did so well, they kept inviting me back for other exercises.
