...this is not the first time the second-generation druggist has used a gun to run off bandits.

If he had killed the robber, it would have been the last time he'd have to use his gun to run off bandits.

This druggist needs to spend more time at the shooting range.

Find him guilty of endangering bystanders, sentence him to 40 hours community service at the range and fine him the cost of the ammunition.

He's doing the right thing. He just needs to get better at it.

This guy needs to spend some time on the range. This should have resulted in the theif dying of lead poisening!

I agree, and the thief should be wearing a toe tag. I think some people purposely "miss" their human targets for one reason or another. I on the other hand am a great shot.

Was his intent to actually miss?

It seems as if this story may be unrelated, but it does.

Yesterday I finished my work as a juror on a panel in a small East Texas town (30,000 pop) where we judged a man for sexual assault of a minor (15 y.o.). The question put to us by the statute was is this person a minor (under 17) and did the perpetrator (age 27) penetrate the minor. It was clearly established that she was age 15 and he admitted on tape after being Mirandized that he penetrated. Eleven of us agreed and on the first vote we voted to give him the maximum punishment allowed by law (20 years in Texas penetentary and 10,000 dollar fine)

Now one person on the panel, who admitted in casual conversation prior to the trial that he used cocaine, marijuana, cocaine, and "any chemical he could find to put into his body" and that this was not bad behavior. He volunteered the information in light casual banter. None of the 11 adults thought it was very funny.

Anyway, we finally forced this democrat idiot drug head to again listen to the audio tape and understand what the man stated. Finally we had a 12-0 agreement and convicted in of "Sexual Assault of a Minor".

Then the next day we tried the penalty phase. We quickly came to the conclusion to give him 20 years in the pen, but the hippy would not fine the man. The 11 thought it was necessary to send the message to the public and the convict that this would not be tolerated in this area. In the penalty phase we learned that the man had 17 prior arrests as a minor (including aggrivated assult with a deadly weapon when he put a gun in a girls face and stole her Chicago Bulls walking jacked, held 2 young girls in threatening hostageses with a meat cleaver while his friends assaulted and invaded a habitation, and many other breaking and enterings, theft auto, destruction of property such as cars, numberous altercations while on probation. Then he was turned over from Juvenile Probattion to Adult Probation. He had never spent so much as 1 night in jail. ANd that was after 22 offences. Finally after this crime of sexual assault of a minor had been committed, he was jailed on parole violation of cocaine use while on probation.

The hippie would not allow maximal punishment under the law and told all of us that he would let him go.

Now, I am an easy-going Freeper, but this was too much for me. Most of the folks wanted to go home after 4 hours of this punk telling us that this perp did nothing wrong. HE SAID "I WILL LET HIM GO HOME". One of my fellow jurors who had 4 daughters and 1 on the way told this hippie that if he let him go and one of his daughters was harmed, we would come see him(the hippie). I told him to ease off, and that I agreed with him.

Then it struck me,....and I started to remember all of the arguements I engaged in on Free Republic and all of the fights and eloquence the freepers have demonstrated and I did dig deep. Then I started to expose this hippie to the other 10 jurors of this liberals ideology and "right thinking" people and where we parted company. Then the shouting began and it got very ugly. I was enjoying humiliating this punk. As his unbridaled humiliation even some of the more timid women on the panel started eating the hippies ass out. We became an unrelenting pack and finally, in total humiliation, the druggie democrat caved. Everyone shook each others hands outside the courthouse, except no one shook the hippies hand. The juror druggie got into his pickup and screeched his tires trying to get away from all of us.

I think FR pushed this over the top. It was only an arguement of a few thousand dollars, but it was sweet.

I will tell you how sweet. I trade commodities. I am currently in coffee. For each penny up price that market moves (I was long) I make 375 dollars). At the beginning of deliberation I called my wife and said we might be here a while. She told me my broker called and we were 6700 dollars up,....did we want to liquidate our position. I returned his call (about 1 hour after the broker had called my wife) and he told me the market had moved back to near when I entered the market. In otherwords, I lost 6700 dollars because this hippie would not be reasonable. Today, reflecting on it, it was worth every penny I lost. We successfully flamed 2 idiots.

I was thinking that this guy's problem is nothing more than "buck fever".

I knew a man who could put an arrow in a target, spent plenty of time in the field, saw a lot of deer, but rarely hit one and when he did it was usually a less than optimal shot. It's easy to get nervous when it is real, and add in the target having a gun, a little buck fever is very understandable.

More range time still wouldn't hurt.

Your right. I've been thinking about this article and what it must have been like for the store owner.

So your standing behind a counter and you see somee POS walking in witha gun drawn while your's is still holstered, what do you do?

First you get out of harms way (duck behind the counter), second you draw your weapon, third you raise it over the counter and fire in his general direction. This would explain the missed shots. I don't think anyone 'knows' what they would do until it happens.

I really don't get the oxycontin craze.
I had it prescribed for me after a recent surgery. Didn't do anything, just like tylenol, so I threw it away.

Certainly not worth getting shot over.

I don't get the craze either, but I can tell you how they take it. Oxy has a time release coating on it which slowly releases the medication. What these folks do is remove the coating by sucking on the pill for some time before swallowing it. The end result is a rush of medication that gives a heroin like high. We all know how desperate heroin addicts can get, and no I have never tried it.

I have no idea what a heroin like high is like. Don't believe I care to know.

All I know is that when the anesthetic wore off, the oxycontin had no more affect than tylenol, which does nothing.

I sometimes think those druggies just make the whole thing up because they are screwed in the head to begin with. There's plenty of stories about people ingesting stupid stuff and supposedly getting high from it.

When I was a kid I used to like to make models, but gave it up because the glue made me sick.
Then a few years later I find other kids sniffing it on purpose. What loonies.

My brother once put birdseed in a batch of brownies and the college kids who ate them went around all day acting real stupid. Later, he could never convince them that they had eaten plain brownies with birdseed in them.

I guess some just want to believe.

The rest of the article:

Maida is licensed to have the gun, and will not face charges for the shooting, police said.

``What do you want me to charge him with, being a victim?'' asked one cop.

``These people nowadays will kill you,'' said Rosemary Maida, who said she can't recall how many times her husband has shot at robbers. ``I try not to think about it. It's better than having someone kill your husband.''      Police said just before 3 p.m. yesterday a robber wearing a ski mask, ball cap and a hoodie, walked into the Massachusetts Avenue shop with a gun drawn.

``He came in ready to rob the store,'' Lt. John Serson said. ``He announced that it was a robbery. The owner drew his gun and between three and four shots were exchanged. The robber left, without the OxyContin.'' He is believed to have bolted in a black Cadillac.

Locals Patty Caccararo, 50, and Elaine O'Connor said Maida's shop is a throwback to yesteryear, when customer service counted.

``We fill our 'scripts here,'' O'Connor said standing near the shop. ``He's always very nice, he says `Hello.' He lets us know about any interactions (between medications).''

More range time still wouldn't hurt.

Range time is always good ... competent professional instruction is even better. A good instructor can introduce the student to stress gradually, and teach him to handle it. You still never know until TSHTF
