Wellington man held in desertion case

U.S. Army Sgt. Karim Iraq, who is charged with deserting the military, was released from Palm Beach County Jail this afternoon - two days after the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office arrested him at his father's house in Wellington.

Iraq's family is from Palestine, and Karim Iraq was born in Detroit.

His case has been referred to the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security.

"He's a dangerous guy with anti-American slogans and a deserter. It's someone we want to get off the street immediately," Richter said.

On handwritten notes on government-issued paper, he curses the military, freedom and the United States, including the words: "Die you know who you are!!!" The bottom of the page has an image of the Star of David in a circle with a line through it.

Army deserter ...Karim Iraq refused to go back to serve in Iraq, he claimed discrimination from his fellow soldiers... His father said he did not want to return because of the reasons for the war.

...He was not in Iraq because of WMD or democracy or any other damn reason...he was in Iraq because he volunteered to be a soldier and he serves where he is told...not where he wants or where he thinks he should be; that’s what we elect political leaders for.

His father says it not that he hates the US but “curses” the US government, “freedom” and the military on government stationary...no he does not hate America, he just does not “understand” America; another “confused” Muslim individual in the War on Terror, innocent in his emotions.

Maybe he was being discriminated in his own community for serving in the Army -- not by his fellow soldiers...why would a simple deserter have his case turned over to the FBI and DHS Homeland Security...hmmm.

I hope I did not read the story correctly. It sounds like they just let him walk out of jail and hope that he gets himself back to Ft. Stewart on his own.

The army just can't seem to keep its hands on deserters these days. There probably needs to be a top-down shakeup at the Pentagon.

Hmmm, is this yet another "misunderstander of Islam" who forgets it's really a peaceful, benevolent and compassionate religion that respects "people of the book?"

Well, at least he hasn't fragged his commanders yet, like other "misunderstanders of islam" who follow the murderous examples of Muhammed (pork be upon him) himself...

they're being promoted just like every other soldier. by a board of reviewers that review miltary background, integrity, and physical standards. it's not an easy process. has anyone on this forum even done anything for their country? or as in this gentleman's case, TWICE.

It wasn't me, I just asked jocko12 by what method he wanted him hanged. I was curious to know if he wanted his neck snapped like a chicken or if he wanted a rope dance.

This guy served his full tour (2 rotations in the middle east) and was due to get discharged. He was involuntarily extended because the army can't get enough recruits to fill the necessary billets.

There are many reasons for this. One reason is many soldiers feel that the administration has abandoned them when they needed support most. Another reason is that they feel that the mission was misrepresented and the reason for this conflict is more economical than peacekeeping. The armed services can not meet their recruiting quotas for obvious reasons. Arabs are not the only people this war is not popular with. Most Americans have some questions about our presence in Iraq and our exit strategy. The war was never popular in Europe or Asia as well, the U.N. never approved of this invasion of Iraq.

It seems odd that out of all the deserters from this conflict that the ones that are featured in the press are Arab-Americans and not Caucasians, african-american or oriental-americans. There are many hard working, honorable Americans of Arab heritage that are currently serving in our armed forces. The discrimination and racial undertones present in this thread are reprehensible and about as Un-American as you can get.

This soldier should be punished for his illegal actions if he is found guilty under UCMJ. There are many deserters these days and Sgt. Karim Iraq's punishment should be no more or no less than other soldiers committing similar crimes. If the military courts decide on administrative punishment, fine. If incarceration is warranted, fine. I do not think that this soldier has done anything that warrants capital punishment.
