Creighton Abrams was Georgie Patton's favorite and best tank battalion commander, the CO of the spearhead that relieved Bastogne, and the creator of the military strategy that bought Nixon time for Vietnamization, and kept the NVA off balance while it was initiated. He was MACV CG when I was in 'Nam, and I was honored to serve under him. Any officer who is compared favorably to Creighton Abrams is, IMHO, an officer of exceptional talent. And that is one of the few things I agree with Col. Hackworth about. But this is not the day to share my opinion of Col. Hackworth.

I agree he served with Patton. Pretty much everything else you said I disagree with, and I served in RVN while he was MACV-CG and have nothing but contempt for him, his total inability to grasp guerrilla/counterguerilla warfare. He was still trying to fight WWII style in RVN and is one of the main architects of the failure of US military policy there (along with Westmoreland).
Anyway this thread is about Hackworth of whom I was not a big fan is what I meant by my original post
