Homolka 'will never' come home: father

Karla Homolka has yet to reveal her plans but the convicted sex killer will never return to her hometown of St. Catharines, the scene of her horrifying crimes, her father said yesterday.

Residents have been on tenterhooks about the possibility that their most infamous neighbour could show up again in the Niagara Peninsula city after her release from prison in July. St. Catharines was scarred by the torture and death of two local teenaged girls at the hands of Homolka and her husband, Paul Bernardo.

Karel Homolka, the father, said he and his wife, Dorothy, have been in regular contact with their daughter, but he does not expect to see her at his front door. "No, she'll never come to St. Catharines. I don't know where she'll go, but not St. Catharines," Mr. Homolka said in an interview.

"What the hell would she need to do here, anyway? It would just start more controversy."

Homolka is scheduled to be released on July 5, the last day of the 12-year sentence she was given after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the killings of Kristen French, 15, and Leslie Mahaffy, 14.

The sentence was part of a plea bargain that required her to testify against Bernardo.

It also took into account the death of her sister, Tammy, who choked to death after the couple knocked her out with tranquilizer and Bernardo raped her.

Two Niagara Regional Police detectives met with the woman at Joliette Institution near Montreal recently, but the force has not revealed yet what she said about her intentions after getting out.

Mr. Homolka said Karla telephones her parents about once a week from Joliette. He said he does not know whether she will settle in Quebec after her release.

He would not comment on whether she is looking forward to her impending freedom, but suggested she is not afraid of what awaits her. "Why be fearful?" the father asked.

His suggestion that Homolka will not return to St. Catharines was welcomed by some residents yesterday.

"That would be great news," said a neighbour on the Homolkas' street, who asked not to be named. "I have no interest of seeing her whatsoever. I don't think she should be let out at all. I think she's guilty and should be put away forever."

But the neighbour said there are no hard feelings toward the parents, who have suffered greatly themselves, calling them "nice people" and quiet.

Most of St. Catharines would be happy if Homolka never came back, said Mayor Tim Rigby.

"I had to live with this thing ever since it started and frankly ... I wouldn't want to see her here," he said in an interview. "It's tough enough even for her parents living here and that would make it even worse."

Niagara Regional Police have said also that they would have no choice but to provide protection to Homolka if she did return and faced threats from angry residents.

Meanwhile, Crown prosecutors in Ontario and Quebec are hammering together a request for an order under the Criminal Code that would allow authorities to impose some restrictions on Homolka's movements after she is released.

The application is expected to be heard by a judge in Joliette in June.

Because her sentence is finished, she will not be on parole or probation when she leaves and the corrections system will have no power to limit her activities.

Neither can I. Even more distressing, by a very strange coincidence, the only Hollywood actors I personally know (and who did not know each other before filming) play the two leads.

I can't believe this woman is being released to the public.

as a sidelight, Niagara Region 'keystone' cops - who plainly couldn't find their own asses with 2 hands and a flashlight - missed much later revealed graphic video tapes of the crimes while searching these animals' love nest

This reminds me a lot of the Boulder police in the Jon Benet Ramsey case (I was living in Denver when that little girl was killed). They had little experience in dealing with murder and bumbled the case so badly that no one will ever pay for her death.

Well, serial murderers/rapists are really very rare, so most police departments really have very little experience in dealing with. In many cases they don't even think they've got serial crimes at first. How many people did Ted Bundy or Jeffrey Dahmer (just to name a couple of famous examples) kill before the police involved clued into the fact?

What I can't forgive is the bumbling by the prosecutors office, and especially their failure to void the deal made with Homolka after it became clear that her deal was based on lies. Their indoctrination in the feminist dogma that women are always victims also contributed to this. I also can't forgive Bernardo's lawyer who sat on the tapes (which admittedly the cops should have found) that would have given them the evidence they needed to put both of them in jail for life. This same attitude is what led to Karla spending her days in jail in what could really only be called a country-club prison - that if women commit criminal acts it's only because they are victims themselves.

Personally, and I know I shouldn't, but I kind of hope someone sees fit to take her out with a bullet through her head from a scoped rifle from 500 yards. Heck, I bet the even the cops wouldn't even exactly bust a gut trying to solve that crime.

Thought you were offering a somewhat watered-down or semi-apologetic version of my earlier post # 17 until I got to your final paragraph:

Now I hope one of their victims' fathers has been practicing his marksmanship for the past 12 years and that, if he's caught, you and I draw Jury duty!

There are no sex offender registration laws in Canada. Too bad.

A sociopath and his equally deluded girlfriend. Twisted love like this made? Oh well, not to think about it. 12 years for being an accomplice in rape and murder is a joke. And that's putting it mildly. Karen Homolka's freedom says more about Canada than what it says about what she did.

No one can believe a beautiful woman could be that EVIL? I guess in a society that prizes looks, character comes down on the bottom in evaluating the truth worth of an individual.

Here is a description of two psychopaths working together:

I guess Canadians also need to watch her future partners.

Its very rare but sometimes it happens. Its a warped relationship and two sociopaths can never really love or care for each other. At best, its a marriage of mutual convenience as long as the interests of both partners are the same.
