Arrest made at Coulter speech

Arrest made at Coulter speech; Student arrested, charged with disorderly conduct after offensive question Wed May 04 2005 11:57:58 ET

Incessant heckling and shouting culminated in an arrest Tuesday night during a speech by controversialist Ann Coulter at the University of Texas at Austin.

THE TEXAN reports: Shouts became so pervasive during the question-and-answer session that Coulter informed the organizers she would no longer take questions if the hecklers were not silenced. For a time, the shouts were considerably lessened, until the issue of gay marriage was broached.

Coulter said she supported the definition of marriage as between a man and a woman on the basis that a good woman civilizes and inspires a man to strive for something better, leading to a question that was met with a stunned silence.

"You say that you believe in the sanctity of marriage," said Ajai Raj, an English sophomore. "How do you feel about marriages where the man does nothing but f*@k his wife up the ass?"

UT Police officers approached Raj to arrest him, resulting in a mass exodus of protesters chanting, "Let him go."

"The person had been disruptive the entire event," said Matt Hardigree, former Student Events Center president. "He took the opportunity to say something lewd and offensive and then made masturbatory gestures as he exited."

Hardigree said that Cheryl Wood from the Office of the Dean of Students spoke with some of the protestors before the event, and assorted members of the Distinguished Speakers Committee asked them to sit in the back if they had signs and to leave quietly if they wanted to leave.

According to Jeffrey Stockerwell, a friend of Raj, officers violently seized Raj and illegally searched him after his question.

Police have charged Raj with disorderly conduct, a Class C misdemeanor.

Representatives of the Austin People's Legal Collective were taking statements from everyone at the scene, in case it should be taken to court.

The booing began early into Coulter's speech, when she issued a joke to pro-choice advocates.

"I wonder why those 'I Heart Partial-Birth Abortion' T-shirts aren't selling better," she said, followed by a combination of cheers and jeers.

One student asked Coulter why universities and institutions place microphones in front of Coulter when she advocates terrorism against liberals, prompting Coulter to mention the strength of her book sales. Coulter has had four New York Times best sellers.

The $30,000 event was co-sponsored by the Texas Union Student Events Center and Student Endowed Centennial Lectureship Committee.

Why is it that everytime a conservative speaks there is this boorish behavior? When a liberal speaks you never hear (or not often) of consevatives mistreating the speaker like this. Is this what the liberals want us to buy into? Is this their brand of love, peace, etc. I don't think I want my kids growing up in a world where these types of people have the ruling power.

With this question in mind, how are these people reproducing? Maybe they are born out of the wrong birth canal; that would explain their brains.

When posting, here's a hint. If it's been on Drudge for more than 5 minutes, there's already a dozen threads started on the topic.

This item was from Drudge yesterday.

Coulter advocates terrorism against liberals?

Well, I guess if terrorism means applying socratic method in analyzing liberal doctrine, I suppose that's accurate.

A mighty broad form of terrorism. If that's the case, every time a university professor grades a thesis based on it's merits, that's terrorism against students.

Because the leftist headmasters in academia brainwash these kids to act like little Brownshirts or Hitler Youth, making the ghosts of Ernest Rohm and Baldur von Shirach smile.

Saw these chanting students last night on Hannity. Surprised at their intensity. They were very, very angry and sounded threatening toward the police. Reminded me of the 60's.

There were a lot more of them in the 60's.

This college generation is far more conservative than when the baby boomers were in college.

This is at least the third one I've seen already.

I agree with you. I think that's why I was surprised by the depth of the anger.

.

Was't a "mass exodus" of students. Maybe 30 or so yelling "let him go" at the cops as they put the rude punk in the police car.

Coulter is abrasive, that's her shtick. Liberals should confront her during the questions period, that makes for great discourse.
Heckling and shouting her down, not allowing her to speak shows they are afraid to argue the issues.

According to a caller yesterday to Rush by a man that claimed to be the event organizer and was on the stage with Ann at the time, this is not true. The article implies he was arrested for asking the offensive question. He was allowed to spew his garbage but when asked to sit down and hand over the floor, he refused. This is when the move to arrest him was made. It's subtle difference but important. The libs are claiming he was arrested for the question - hence, his precious RTFS was restrained.

I read the article yesterday with all his filthy mouthed rantings. This kid's problem is that no one has ever kicked his teeth in before. I have a feeling that this day is not too far off.
