PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: Today President Bush attended the Latino Small Business Conference in Washington, and participated in a discussion about Social Security. Also today, the White House released some details of the President's upcoming trip to Europe.
The presidential party will travel to Latvia, the Netherlands, Russia, and Georgia May 6-10 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. His visit will honor the shared sacrifice of millions of Americans and Europeans to defeat tyranny, and mark the growth of democracy throughout the continent. Building on the President's February visit to Europe, this trip will underscore the common commitment of the United States and our European allies and partners to work together to advance freedom, prosperity, and tolerance in Europe, its neighborhood, and beyond.
In Riga, Latvia, President Bush will meet the Presidents of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. In the Netherlands, the President will hold bilateral meetings and commemorate Victory in Europe Day at the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial at Margraten near Maastricht. President Bush will then travel to Moscow, Russia, to participate in the World War II commemoration ceremony and to meet President Putin. The President will conclude his trip with a visit to Tbilisi, Georgia to underscore his support for democracy, historic reform, and peaceful conflict resolution. In Georgia, he will meet with President Saakashvili and the head of the Georgian Parliament.
In addition to all of the cities and national leaders he visits, GWB will meet community leaders or students at each stop.
Also today, news broke that a court in the Netherlands denied an appeal by Leftists groups to have President Bush arrested when he arrives there later this week. Here is a link to the separate FR thread for those who may have missed it.
QUOTE OF THE DAY: From the President's remarks to the Latino Small Business Conference in Washington this morning.
Before I talk about Social Security, though, I want to remind you the war on terror goes on. And today's report on the capture of a top al Qaeda operative, Abu Faraj Al-Libbi, represents a critical victory in the war on terror. (Applause.)
Al-Libbi was a top general for bin Laden. He was a major facilitator and a chief planner for the al Qaeda network. His arrest removes a dangerous enemy who was a direct threat to America and for those who love freedom.
I applaud the Pakistani government for their strong cooperation in the war on terror. I applaud the Pakistani government and President Musharraf for acting on solid intelligence to bring this man to justice. The fight continues. We'll stay on the offensive until al Qaeda is defeated.

Russian soldiers marched today during a rehearsal for a military parade in central St.Petersburg. Russia is preparing to mark the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II on Sunday. President Bush will tell east Europeans he is not ignoring their fears of a resurgent Russia by joining in Moscow's celebrations of the victory that consigned them to Soviet oppression. Unlike the U.S. president, or even the leaders of World War II losers Germany and Japan, east European leaders have had to agonize over whether to join Bush in Moscow on May 9 for the 60th anniversary of the end of fighting in Europe. For many, 1945 saw the start of half a century of communist captivity.

As noted in the Quote of the Day, before beginning his prepared remarks at the Latino conference this morning, President Bush praised the Pakistanis for capturing Al Queda's #3 man, Abu Faraj al-Libbi. (This is one strange and scary-looking dude.)
