Zero tolerance, zero common sense.

I agree. But if we're going to be conservative,
then we have to obey the law. Let THEM be the ones
who don't.
Put the sign up on the house or in the livingroom.
Tell everyone you know your daughter's come home.
We're all proud of her. May she continue to be
safe.

What's the big deal?
Let them arrest you and request a jury trial.
Slam dunk!

Sad, but a good move in the end. If they let the "Welcome Home" sign stay up they would also have to leave any Anti War Signs.

Baloney. Not really. If this government allowed one side to post its message on public property, it would soon find itself embroiled in a lawsuit by other groups demanding the same treatment.

So should the city amened the sign ordnance to read the 'city will remove only signs that Diddle E. Squat does not agree should be on a median or right of way"?
To: Modernman
Oh I understand the legal arguments, but that is no excuse for the death of common sense and discretion. We are a hell of a lot worse off with the shift to zero tolerance strict legalism. The rule of law is extremely important, but until recently it has always had room for judgements, discretion, common sense and local community standards.

A world of difference between that town and mine. Here when a soldier arrives he gets greeted at the city limits by Police Cars, Firetrucks and Ambulances. People usually line the streets, horns are honked, flags are waved and SIGNS ARE PUT UP! All of these little celebrations go by my gas station and sometimes I may as well be closed because people tend to park at the entrances to my place. I don't mind a few minutes loss of business to welcome a vet home, though. These people celebrated my return home twice and welcomed my daughter home the same way.

Now that's an intelligent, well thought-out retort.

"Welcome Back Soldier"
The city and its employees who did this are JERKS.I would put it back up and go to trial.

I agree. I'd have put this sign on my property, with red/white/blue bunting on the house. I just bought another 5x7 foot Flag and a Winchester parade cannon to celebrate our next Independence Day event.

I think it sounds funny that code enforcement just happened to be in the area. They are never where you need them in my city.
To: jsbankston
Yeah, we are far better off banning flyers seeking lost puppies or kid's lemonade stands, because otherwise we'd have to also allow ads for porn shops and abortion clinics. Give me a break. Ordinances can be written to allow for innocous homemade signs that fit under a category like 'neighborhood decorations' or 'neighborhood amenities', defining what falls under such, without it being considered political speech which would require equal access.
But that requires common sense.
