NBCSandiego.com Roberts Makes Decision About Running For Mayor Murphy Will Leave Office On July 15
POSTED: 11:40 am PDT May 4, 2005 UPDATED: 11:57 am PDT May 4, 2005
SAN DIEGO -- County Supervisor Ron Roberts announced Wednesday morning that he would not seek the San Diego mayor's office.
Roberts, who has unsuccessfully run for city mayor four times, made the announcement at 11 a.m. at the County Administration Building in San Diego. Instead, Roberts said he would focus on his re-election to the County Board of Supervisors...
Roberts said that he was not ready to endorse any candidate for mayor. So far, City Councilwoman Donna Frye and former police chief Jerry Sanders have both said they would seek the office. During the announcement, Roberts told the media that he thought the city was in financial ruins when he ran for office in 2004 and blamed Murphy for the San Diego's fiscal problems.
Murphy announced his resignation last Monday morning outside City Hall, saying the decision was in the "best interests of San Diego." He said he would stay on until July 15 to complete next year's city budget. He also said he hoped the City Council could consolidate a special election with an anticipated statewide Nov. 8 election, saving the city millions of dollars.

Now what? Do we get behind little known Sanders who will surely lose? Is Sanders really who the County GOP and the money folks are going to push as the answer to the union's millions and Donna Frye?
Please ping other San Diego freepers.
If Donna Frye becomes mayor, kiss San Diego goodbye!
A San Diego mayoral election without Ron Roberts is like a cop convention without donuts.
Struggle as you might. Ol'Saddlebags Donna will be the next Mayor of Sandy Eggo.
I'm not surprised as all. I think Ron (rightly) believes that this whole mess at City Hall is something the liberals of the city govt would love to hang around his neck.
I think this was a very smart move on his part .. while I'm personally disappointed .. it was the right thing.
