if I get a drug conviction—whoops!—there goes my financial aid.

The next time you hurredly sign for your next financial aid package, read the fine print about being responsible enough while getting aid, not to do drugs. There's a reason they include that little clause. The underwriters want you to be sober enough to graduate and repay your aid through income taxes--so the next schmuck like you can receive aid too.

The reason for that little clause has nothing to do with underwriters and everything to do with WoD politics.

But I'm sure you are perfectly okay with denying student aid to a guy caught with a joint while allowing it to a convicted rapist.

That has almost nothing to do with the bills presented to the House and Senate several years ago, bills that Bush Administration pushed for. They were publicly proclaimed as a WoD pieces of legislation, and were pushed by anti-drug lobbyists in D.C. As far as I know, the large underwriters UCI etc., were against this piece of legislation, because it further restricted their lendors' discretion.

There have been enough horror stories arising from this rigid law then can be counted. This law is ideological legislation, there is no solid actuarial support for the provisions in the law.
