BERLIN - A court in Berlin heard on Tuesday how the bizarre case of a man who killed and partially ate his gay lover prompted a Berlin man to do the same thing with a sexual encounter he made over the Internet.
The 41-year-old unemployed house painter, who faces charges of murder, confessed before Berlin State Court judges and said he gave in to "the dark side of my personality" by killing and dismembering a sex partner last year.
The unnamed defendant told the court he had intended to follow in the footsteps of Armin Meiwes, the gay man in central Germany who killed and partially devoured his male lover in 2001.
Last month, Germany's high court ordered a retrial of Meiwes, currently serving an eight-and-a-half-year prison term for manslaughter. The high court called the sentence too lenient and said he should be retried on a charge of murder.
A lower court had thrown out a murder conviction, siding with defence attorneys who argued that Meiwes' victim had consented to be killed and eaten. Grisly videotape images showed the victim begging Meiwes to kill him. The two men even ate the victim's severed penis together.
In the new Berlin case, the defendant told the court on Tuesday that he had followed Meiwes' example by finding a victim via an Internet chat room. After killing and dismembering his victim, however, he was unable to bring himself to eat the man's flesh even though he kept the victim's severed penis in his refrigerator with that intention.
Unlike Meiwes' victim, however, the Berlin man's victim, described only as a music teacher, had not agreed to be killed and eaten, lawyers for both sides told the court. He was tied to a chair and stabbed to death with a screwdriver, according to the defendant's sworn confession.
Those Germans are so sophisticated, aren't they?
