ok, this is getting out of hand -- all of this citing of specious polls on this topic. the fear mongering about lost benefits and the AARP stuff has got to stop. the debate over private accounts could not be more dishonest at this point. people keep saying the president's plan, w/it's emphasis on private accounts, doesn't solve the so-called "solvency issue," and so its focus is all wrong. what b.s. in the short- and medium- term (20-30 years), the solvency of social security needs to be fixed via a new method of indexing or some other stop loss. but in the long-term the only way to permanently fix it is to CHANGE IT STRUCTURALLY, from a pay as you go system to an ownership-based system. that's what the president is trying to do and that's why his plan is ultimately all about fixing long-term solvency.
