Kerry, Boxer PACs Pressure Chaffee

Democrats desperate to prevent tough-talking pro-U.S. John Bolton from going to the U.N. are going all-out to convince Republican senators from supporting his nomination.

Senators John Kerry and Barbara Boxer, for example, are using their political action committees (PACs) to put pressure on Republican Senators to vote against their President's nominee to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Kerry is even using his PAC funds to run ads in Rhode Island to convince GOP Senator Lincoln Chaffee to turn his back on President Bush and vote against his nominee's senate conformation.

On his PAC website Kerry writes, "In addition to being vocal about my own opposition to Senator Bolton, I am organizing johnkerry.com activists in Rhode Island to contact Senator Chafee, and I am running online ads in the Rhode Island media."

On her PAC website, Boxer urges her supporters to sign her petition to President Bush to throw Bolton to the wolves and name someone else to represent the United States at the scandal-ridden United Nations.

Bragged Boxer: "Thanks in large part to your efforts, including more than 37,000 emails you sent to your senators in protest, Bolton's nomination was stopped in its tracks. Republican Senator George Voinovich of Ohio joined committee Democrats in urging more careful consideration of John Bolton's nomination, delaying a final vote for three weeks - and I am so grateful for his support on this critical issue."

If sKerry wasn't such an idiot, he'd realize that Chaffee usually does this anyway.

The Rats are very afraid to be throwing money at this as well. They must know that Bolton will out some of them for putting allegiance to the UN over their own country.

I wonder if what they are doing violates any campaign finance laws or congressional ethics rules. They scream about Delay, but then they openly use their PACs to influence a Senator's vote.

Is there some sort of senate colleague protocol about politicking in the other guy's back yard? Sounds like some Senators are moonlighting as lobbyists if they are going to advocate outside the senate floor for legislation under consideration. I think this is a serious charge that needs the attention of the FEC and the senate ethics committee.

Even in RI, I bet people hate the UN. Why not run some ads about UN corruption in RI?

What's really behind this?

I don't know, but MA politicians have come to regard RI as a dependency or fiefdom. Ted Kennedy's son has a RI seat in the US House. So maybe Kerry is trying to influence Kennedy either through favors or challenges, or maybe he has his own favored candidate in RI. Then again, when you're married to millions, you don't count every penny.
