ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- On the surface, Jennifer Wilbanks was a happy bride-to-be who showed no sign to friends or family that she wanted to call off her extravagant wedding.
But underneath, as she would later tell police after running away to New Mexico, Wilbanks was scared and not sure she wanted to go through with her big day.
Marriage counselors say Wilbanks' actions are an extreme but understandable reaction to the stress of the wedding and the fear of disappointing others by backing out.
"Sometimes it's like being stuck in a river getting whisked over a waterfall," said Dr. Charles Raison, a psychiatrist and Emory University instructor who has counseled people about marital concerns. "The current is so strong, you can't fight it."
Shame about canceling a wedding at the last minute can lead to feelings of helplessness, counselors say.
"They've committed themselves out there in public, to their partner, their minister, their community, their friends while they've been perhaps nursing some ambivalence, mixed feelings and they feel isolated without being able to share it with anyone

I am all for upping the ante/charges for such "crimes." If the activity is not criminal in nature then the penalty should be that the responsible party pays the bill. If it is criminal (say in the Lundsford case) then the charge should be raised to add more jail time. Further, I am not aware of any free ambulance. Should the risk-takers who choose to mountain climb, fish on the Great Lakes or elsewhere, hike in areas that one can become lost, etc not be held responsible for rescue costs if they arise? All lifesaving processes, i.e., avalanche rescues, coast guard rescues, falling through the ice, etc, and etc, are choices of the risk taker and should be billable time to someone other than general society. The monetary responsibility that 'could' be involve should be on the person who chose to take the risk.
Yup, and I normally like him, but this "Oh, weddings are so difficult, she was overwhelmed, everyone says this just isn't like her" thing just got sick.
He hardly listened to callers who told him she had cost law enforcement and volunteers thousands of dollars and hours searching for her, and he certainly didn't seem to know that she has done this sort of altar-ducking before.

I agree people make honest mistakes and there is a price for the mistake. It is time we start charging that price instead of making excuses no matter who is involved or what the situation is.

I'd think you were right, except they are living together. In what super-conservative society, that won't even speak of sex, is it tolerated for unmarried people to live together. It just makes no sense, and is also VERY WEIRD if true.

24 was ridiculous, totally unbelivable even for that unbelievable show. Hubby said "leave this hour out of the dvd!" and CSI Miami was also disappointing.

That's Greta van "Pesteren's" show. IMHO, she wasn't ready for prime time, even when she was at CNN and still is rough around the edges. Her untrained Wisconsin twangy speech pattern shows a need for diction and elocution training. Those four lawyers yelling at each other, as you say, always look to me like the set-up of "Hollywood Squares!".........and I can't BEAR that "Jayne Weintraub" in Florida!
She's so ultra liberal as a defense attorney, that one gets the impression from everything that she says, that no criminal is ever guilty. All of them should walk, and no prosecutor can ever make any decent case for conviction.
This darling brown eyed lassie is just not thinking clearly. If she had been smart she would have blown off the "I was abducted by an Hispanic male and white woman in a blue van" rap.
She should have told the coppers that she was abducted by black/vacant eyed ALIENS, and these aliens told her in coded language that they wanted her hair for DNA and reproductive purposes. She could have avoided all her troubles.

Vanity was even more pathetic and simple today than usual...... and, he never listens to callers. It's always about his sophomoric talking points. As soon as to whomever he is speaking is finished with their thought (and often before they are finished with their thought) he is immediately back into his own opinion. He thinks like a twelve year old. It's all about him.
