Uhh, she doesn't want to marry him maybe? I dunno, fleeing to Vegas (to gamble, meet a guy, or both), then calling your fiancee with a baldfaced lie when you're busted flat in NM, doesn't sound to me like true love. But I'm just a heartless anti-Christian southern basher I suppose :)
