Two U.S. jets missing on Iraq mission-Centcom
22 minutes ago
The U.S. military lost contact Monday night with two Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet aircraft in Iraq, a statement said.
The military said the two planes were from the USS Carl Vinson. The status of the crew is unknown and a search effort is under way.
The military statement said there was no initial indication of hostile fire in the area at the time contact was lost.
The U.S. military could not confirm by telephone any further details about whether the planes were single or two-seaters, could not say which squadron the aircraft were from or where the Carl Vinson was operating.

Sounds like it could be a midair.

They always patrol in pairs...very unlikely both were downed without any Maydays getting out..

Damn! Sounds like an episode of "24". Nope - more like JAG jumped the shark.
Seriously, I have no doubt that Carl Vinson's CIC has a bead on where those jets went off the scope. This is battle-line intel, Folks, and we won't know about it for a few days yet - unless PAO is told to tell us.

You're right, I misread the article in that they were from an aircraft carrier. I was thinking stolen from some air base or something.

There is a report now that they have collided, and there is a search for the crews.
How many people usually travel on such jets?
To: BlackVeil
F/A 18s are 2-man jets IIRC.

How many people usually travel on such jets?If they are Marine F/A-18's then you can safely bet that they are single-seaters.

It's the "F" that's a two-seater. The "E" is single-seat.
The Marines, while mostly using single-seat "A"s and "C"s, DO fly a twin-seat, interdiction/night-attack version of the "D". However, iirc they've never done an operational deployment on a carrier (they do go aboard occasionally to keep the pilots CarQual'd.)
