America does have strong Puritan roots, and they seem to run through both the Left and the Right. Rightwing Puritan roots manifest themselves through some of the "Religious Right - hardshell Baptists, Moral Majority, social conservatives, etc," while on the Left they manifest in the form of political correctness and feminism.
