This was an adult audience late at night, the jokes were milder than a lot of stuff comics used back in the 50s for an adult audience.
Dolly Madison would have shocked the hair off you. (Read Mark Twain's "Tudor Dinner Table Conversation" for an idea of what was considered appropriate conversation back in those days -- the 18th c. was not much of an improvement over the 16th). Alice Roosevelt was considered somewhat daring back in the 90s, and she told jokes a WHOLE lot worse than this! (Teddy used to say, "I can run the country, or I can control Alice. Not both.")
I remember reading in the book that came out 5 or 6 years ago about John Addams, by David McCullough, that seemed a little bit risque! Nowadays, it would've been no more risque than what Laura said. (well, maybe a little bit more)Now men may've been able to get away with a little more than women could; especially in a semi-private discussion.
But even he never went as far as most men of today do! I can't remember exactly what he said. But there were a few mildly risque comments he made.
