Snips:

[The scowling handyman suspected of killing a Rockland County mother of two — who was busted last week after a terrifying suburban manhunt — made a series of "disgustingly" obscene phone calls to his victim's friends after brutally murdering her, police said yesterday.]

[Clarkstown Detective Lt. Charles Delo said Douglas Herrera, 29, charged in the murder of Mary Nagle, 42, used her cellphone to automatically dial at least 20 people listed in her directory. ]

[...capture the handyman in a wooded area about a mile from the murder scene after a four-hour manhunt.]

[Cops said yesterday they had recovered the knife used in the murder.]

[At Herrera's arraignment yesterday, the handcuffed and frowning Guatemalan native told Judge Joel Flick in Spanish, through an interpreter, that he had been hired to clean up Nagle's deck — but that he had nothing to do with her killing. ]

This guy clearly needs help. With the intervention of a few
social workers and a "holistic" psychiatrist,I think he can
rejoin the ranks of productive citizens.

Woman put up a fight before man killed her in her own bed

Chief Peter Noonan

A house painter hired by a contractor was arraigned today on charges of first and second-degree murder for killing Mary Nagel, 42, in her Tamarac Avenue, New City home Friday morning. Douglas Herrera of Spring Valley is being held in the Rockland County Jail without bail. The case is expected to go to a grand jury next week.

Herrera was captured by police Friday in a wooded area not far from the crime scene when a police helicopter spotted him hiding behind a tree. When arrested, he was wearing clothes belonging to the victim's husband, Daniel, Clarkstown Town Police said.

The victim, a mother of two small children had defensive wounds, indicating she struggled with her killer. er partially clothed body was found face down on her bed in the master bedroom. Police are awaiting results of forensic analysis, but said it appears the woman had been sexually assaulted.

One of the victim's three sisters, Ann Fallon, had spoken to Nagel by phone early Friday morning about having her substitute for her in a tennis match. They spoke again, but the victim told her sister she had to hang up because the painter wanted to talk to her.

When she didn't arrive to play tennis, the sister went over to the house and spoke to Herrera who was outside. He told her Nagel had left the house. Herrera then left and Mrs. Fallon went upstairs to find a trail of blood. She called 911, police responded and found the body.

Police Det. Lt. Charles Delo said no murder weapon has been determined pending autopsy results as to the cause of death. He did say the woman had suffered blunt force trauma and stab wounds. A knife believed to be used in the attack was recovered.

Delo sad this is the 11th homicide in the last eight years in the community that hosts the Rockland County seat. The last homicide was that of a newborn infant whose body was placed on the front steps of a church last year. That unsolved case remains under active investigation, police said.

FROM NY TIMES:
The police said that after Mr. Herrera, a Guatemalan immigrant, killed Mrs. Nagle, he took some of her husband's clothes: a white polo shirt and beige shorts, which he was wearing when he was arrested. As Mr. Herrera left the house, the police said, he ran into Ann Fallon, one of Mrs. Nagle's sisters, who had arrived to see why she had not shown up to play tennis.

Mr. Herrera, whose work clothes were streaked with blood and paint, told Ms. Fallon in Spanish that he did not speak English and left, the detective said. After entering the house and seeing blood on the carpet, Ms. Fallon immediately called the police. Then, Detective Delo said, she discovered Mrs. Nagle's body face down on her bed, unclothed except for a tennis top pulled above her chest.

"When he was arrested, Herrera had a valid California driver's license with a San Francisco address, but apparently had been living in Spring Valley, Delo said. Clarkstown police said they were in contact with California authorities about Herrera's background.

Herrera is a native of Guatemala. Police did not know how long he had been in the United States or his immigration status. He apparently had used more than one name."

What're the odds on this one?

Well, hell's bells. If he had a California driver's license he must be okay.

The scruffy-looking suspect sported a head of thick black hair and a full beard and mustache.

What full beard? Looks more like 5 o'clock shadow. Any bets if the poor guy was illegal just trying to make an honest living?
