A MATERNITY unit has been created within a secondary school to cope with soaring rates of teenage pregnancies.
Parents of children at Menzieshill High School in Dundee, which has Western Europes highest rate of teenage pregnancies, have hit out at the plan to create a centre for pregnant pupils and schoolgirl mothers.
Dundee City Council plans to have the specialist unit opened within Menzieshill in time for the start of the next academic year in August.
More than one in every 100 schoolgirls in Dundee aged between 13 and 15 will become pregnant, according to statistics released this week.
Pregnant girls and schoolgirl mothers are currently housed away from mainstream education in Avrom House in Broughty Ferry. But that unit is to be closed and the underage mothers will be moved to education alongside ordinary classrooms at Menzieshill.
One mother, who asked not to be named, said the plans had caused outrage and would provide a bad influence to other children. She said the move would "normalise" teenage pregnancy in the eyes of other pupils and make them think it was acceptable behaviour.

Again, no mention of child rape.
Coming????????
Some South Florida schools have breast pumping rooms!
The best antidote I can think of for teenage pregnancy is to send these girls to the homes of mothers with a baby in the house, with the stipulation that the teenage girl must be fully responsible for the baby - morning, noon and night - for a weekend or so. She will get all the joys of crying, crying, feeding, rocking, walking around holding it, hoping it will nap, being woken up several times a night, crappy diapers, crying, missing Friday night out, missing Saturday night out, etc.
All it takes to prevent teenage pregnancy is a dime. SuperGlue it to the inside of the girl's knees.
..both are sterling ideas. :D
How sexist.
Save the dime and superglue the boy's zipper - right after you staple his pants around his waist ;)
And how about the parents of both boys and girls doing some *supervision*? My 14-year-old isn't pregant.
I wonder how many of these teenagers are immigrants?
True, although it could also be that the fathers of these unborn babies are children themselves...it does happen - a lot more than we'd like to think.
A lot of people put the blame solely on the girl for getting pregnant, but equal responsibility falls on the father. No one seems to mention the boys that make the 2nd party in the tango. If he's over legal age, it's definitely statutory rape, but what if they boys are under 18 (or whatever the legal age is). Is it still statutory if both parties are under the legal age? Are the boys' parents teaching them the same values as should be taught to young girls? Something's got to be done about these irresponsible parents.
I totally agree. The way these stories appear in the media, you'd think the girls get pregnant by themselves.
