Liberals Play The Unity Card

Liberals play the unity card

Just when you thought the upcoming federal election was all about Ontario ... Nope -- it's all about Quebec!

The increasingly desperate Liberals are zeroing in on this campaign's doomsday script, and it sounds like this: "The country is breaking up! The separatists are winning! Only we can save Canada! Vote Liberal!"

We expect this kind of smear campaign when they go after Stephen Harper's Conservatives, of course.

But we know they've gone off the deep end when they accuse one of their own of being "dangerous for Canada" -- Ontario Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty.

McGuinty's sin, according to federal Liberal Revenue Minster John McCallum? Having the temerity to demand Ontario get a better deal out of federal equalization.

"(Ontario's campaign) comes at precisely the moment when the federal government, weakened by sponsorship, faces an opposition made up mainly of separatists and extreme provincialists," McCallum said Thursday.

Well, that's rich. We don't recall McCallum or his fellow federal Grits doing this Chicken Little routine when similar gripes were raised by the premiers of Newfoundland or New Brunswick, or, for that matter, Quebec.

Ah, but Dalton, well, he's the worst kind of traitor -- a Liberal leading the most Liberal of provinces, where Liberal support is slipping, federally and provincially.

But this is more serious than Liberals fighting Liberals. This kind of attack is, well, dangerous for Canada.

Seizing on a new poll that purportedly shows support for separatism at new heights among Quebecers (54%), McCallum's boss, PM Paul Martin, is now crying that Harper is "destructive to Canada" and ready to get "in bed" with Bloc Quebecois Leader Gilles Duceppe.

All this is quite astonishing, given the utter failure of Liberals on the national unity file. They all but lost the country in 1995. Their fix for that was AdScam. The rest is history. How could Conservatives possibly do any worse?

We've always believed that Quebecers, given a clear referendum question, will never vote to leave Canada. Indeed, the latest poll question is anything but clear (56% of sovereignty supporters also said they wanted to stay in Canada).

The clear question right now is this: Do the Liberals have the moral authority to govern this country?

Quebec is saying no. Increasingly, so is every other region of the country. While the Liberals will scream otherwise, that sounds a whole lot like national unity to us.

And another thing ...

Bravo to new Police Chief Bill Blair and his officers who yesterday announced a gang crackdown that netted a whopping 108 new charges in connection with four murders, nine attempted murders and other gang-related crimes. Now that's what we call a good start!

If the country is breaking up, it's because of the Liberals.

Sounds familiar? Clinton did it when he ran for both terms as prez in US. Martin is attempting to duplicate that up here....
