I always found it hard to take seriously and figured it had to be an act or just exaggerated so much as to come off as absurd (by western standards). I never found the act particularly appealing.
You would not be the first man who finds the whole put-on unappealing. Some guys eat it all up, esp. the guys my sister dormed with when she did her semester abroad there.
