Hutchison praises civilians patrolling border
Associated Press
WASHINGTON - Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison said the civilians who patrolled Arizona's border with Mexico are "very brave" and "caring."
The Texas Republican made the comments late Thursday during Senate debate on the budget. Several volunteers with the "Minuteman Project," some armed, have been patrolling the Arizona-Mexican border. The group is hoping to expand to the Canadian border and other border states.
"We have seen some very brave people sitting on the border of Arizona and Mexico in the last few weeks and I have to say I think these people have shown a commitment and a caring that should be acknowledged here in the United States Senate," Hutchison said, according to a transcript from her office.
Hutchison was pushing for more money for Border Patrol and other immigration enforcement needs. She said money for the agency had been reduced in negotiations with the House.
The volunteers have said they have alerted federal officials to hundreds of cases of illegal immigrants crossing into the United States at the Arizona border and helped stem illegal immigrant traffic. Some federal officials disagree that they had an impact. And President Bush, when asked about the group, said he does not support vigilantes.
Hutchison spokesman Chris Paulitz declined to comment when asked whether Hutchison supports the actions taken by the volunteer patrols. He said the senator is impressed with their commitment and working hard to relieve them of their duty.
It is so satisfying to see the project get the recognition it deserves. I'm lucky to have been a part of this historic event. I want to thank all the FReepers who came to my little corner of the world and put themselves in harm's way to protect my family, my community, and the nation and to call attention to this intolerable problem. I want to thank everyone else for their support of this project. We did it!

Does this mean the patrols will end?
IIRC they are continuing under another name. I think there are also plans to expand it to texas and new mexico.
Minuteman Project was scheduled from the month of April. Tomorrow is the last day of the month. The patrols will continue in southeastern Arizona under Civil Homeland Defense. The Minuteman Project organizers will continue to organize similar citizens patrol groups along the border and will start a new effort which includes interior enforcement. So, no, the patrols will not end.
Excellent. Let's keep track of which politicians say what about this. The more the better. I don't think the Rats will praise the Minutemen!
Kay Bailey Hutchison is RINO that will say anything to promote her political ambitions. I wouldn't trust her as far as I could spit. Few things are worse than getting stabbed in the back by one of your own.
I really appreciate it, and all the updates you provided as well. You should be very proud of what you all accomplished down there.
A few brave American patriots saw a problem, called attention to it, and when their elected representatives shirked their duty took matters into their own hands in a perfectly peaceable and lawful manner. Your actions and those of the others who joined you led directly to the apprehension of hundreds of people who attempted to break our immigration laws and violate our sovereign borders.
What's equally important to my mind is the fact that you weathered the slings and arrows of thousands of idiots who called you 'racists' and 'drunks on lawn chairs slobbering into CB microphones' and proved them all wrong.
Not one single person on either side of the border was hurt, thank God. Most especially not any of the MMP. There was only one arrest of an MM volunteer and after much ballyhoo no charges were actually filed. Funny thing, that.
You people have been maligned and slandered both in the National Press and by more than just a few absolutely shameless and IMO reprehensible persons here.
One other esteemed Freeper who goes by the handle of CulturalJihad compared you folks to Timothy McViegh. That was absolutely beyond the pale as far as I'm concerned and I am quite happy to be one of the many who hit the 'abuse' button in that particular case.
Lots of people owe you and your friends down there an apology. I'm happy to say I'm not one of them. What I do owe you is a very large debt of gratitude and a healthy measure of respect.
You have them both. Thanks Spiff. Thank you very much.
Please keep me posted as to any future plans you have with the MMP. I'll help in any way I can.
Warm regards,
L
Its a pity that our border security is so poor that the people have to result to projects like this. Very patriotic, but I hope the volunteers know that the illegal immigrants can fight back. Incidents will occur. It will be interesting to see if public opinion changes once that happens.
Not one immigration question was posed to POTUS last night by the elite DC press corps. Not one.
The elite DC MSM could care less about the immivasion.
This active duty sailor just wants to say thanks to the "undocumented border patrol" who are just "doing the jobs that (some other)Americans won't do." :)
THAT was painfully apparent. Damn them, because with a little help, the issue would spread like wildfire and become impossible to ignore.
"The group is hoping to expand to the CANADIAN border and other border states."
This is a joke right?
If the Minuteman Project moves to the Canadian border they better bring satalite TVs and a lot of pizza because they're going to have a lot of time on their hands.
The Canadian border is about twice the length of the US Mexico border and most of it is miles from any population centers on the Canadian side and in the West very few border crossings.
There are four in BC, three of them in the Frazer Valley and those are high traffic freight crossing with lots of customs personell on both sides.
And where is the evidence of large numbers of Canadians crossing the border to do the work that Americans are not willing to do.
The problem with illegal immigration is on the US Mexican border. Even Asians are choosing to enter there rather than get stranded by smugglers on the remote North Coast of BC 600 miles from another human being.

By all measures, the MMP was a stunning success...and the media still insists on portraying the MMP in this negative manner.
There was only one arrest of an MM volunteer and after much ballyhoo no charges were actually filed. Funny thing, that.
Actually, no volunteers were arrested. The only thing that happened was that prank by the fake candidate from California. He was never arrested, charges were never filed, it was a case of false accusations made by the criminal invader. It was all captured on tape and the kids was exonerated.
Spiff...Lurker said what I feel...so, I'd like to just add a big ole ditto from this Gramma.
I sure hope & pray that this catches on like a wildfire and kids like my Brad have a better America to grow up in.
